If you've had perfect teeth your whole life, what's coming in your 60s and 70s might catch you off guard.
You've barely had a filling in 40 years, and then suddenly there's decay in spots that were never a problem before. It's not because you stopped taking care of your teeth but it's because aging changes everything about what's happening in your mouth.
Medications cause dry mouth, and dry mouth accelerates decay. Your gums recede, exposing parts of the tooth that weren't designed to handle that kind of exposure. Dexterity changes, and brushing and flossing get harder than they used to be.
The strategy that works is getting ahead of it. If we can protect and restore the vulnerable areas while you're still in good health, those teeth hold up dramatically better when things start to shift. We'll also recommend coming in more often, every three or four months instead of six, so we're catching things early instead of chasing them.
There are products specifically designed to keep your mouth moist and protect your enamel when saliva isn't doing its job anymore, and water picks are a game changer for anyone whose dexterity isn't what it used to be.
If it's been a while since your last visit, your teeth may have changed.
