‼️ YES, you should be taking care of baby teeth, even though they will fall out!
Most children lose their first baby tooth around age 6 and don’t lose their last one until ages 10–12.
That’s YEARS of eating, speaking, smiling, growing, and developing with baby teeth, and the way you care for them now can impact their oral health for a lifetime.
From our pediatric dental team (and fellow moms) to you, here's what parents should know about taking care of baby teeth ⤵️
🐝 Focus on the gumline, not just the tooth!
Plaque loves to sit right along the gums, which is where those early spots and cavities happen for babies and toddlers.
🐝 Start when their first tooth comes in!
Oral care starts early. Brushing should start as soon as you see a tooth. You can give your baby a toothbrush to chew on to get them used to the sensation of bristles in their mouth.
🐝 Be mindful of all-day sipping and snacking
Milk, juice, snack pouches, crackers… frequent snacking and sipping sugar drinks throughout give cavity-causing bacteria more opportunities to grow.
🐝 Never underestimate the power of having a little fun! Let's be honest, fighting to brush your child's teeth twice a day can feel like a FOREVER battle, but the more frustrated you get, the more they resist 😅
Try counting teeth, making silly mouth noises, finding animals in their teeth, letting them brush your teeth first, or giving them choices (like toothbrush color) so they feel more in control of the situation.
