Gum grafting case of the month. Our goal at Lawrence Periodontics is to restore the natural contour, texture, pigmentation and overall esthetics to our patients with gingival (gum) recession. Mandibular canines frequently present with gum recession either due to the outward location of the tooth in relationship to the others, or because of aggressive tooth brushing (case below). With alterations to the brushing habits, and proper care during the post-op healing period, root coverage can be maintained over the lifespan of the teeth.

TISSUE IS IMPORTANT! Emerging evidence is confirming that the long-term success and survival of implants does not depend solely on osseointegration (bone/implant contact), but also on the soft tissues around the neck of the implant. This soft-tissue collar serves as a biological seal that ensures healthy conditions and may prevent implant diseases or failure. The photos below is a 6-month follow-up of Implant debridement + Implantoplasty + Peri-implant free gingival graft (FGG) in the lower right.

Has your dentist mentioned you have gum recession, or are you experiencing sensitivity when you eat or drink cold liquids/foods? If the answer is yes, you have most likely heard, spoke to someone, or done your research about gum grafting procedures and heard the horror stories with using your own tissue from the roof of the mouth (palate). While this is sometimes unavoidable, modern advancements in gum grafting allow these procedures to be performed with the use of donated tissue (allograft), eliminating the need to induce a secondary palatal wound, resulting in a pain-free experience that will keep you looking and feeling your best! At Lawrence Periodontics, the latest techniques in gum grafting are being utilized to enhance the overall patient experience. The photos below are all examples of the use of donor tissue (allograft) with a 1-year follow-up (all upper right). Please contact Lawrence Periodontics @ (785) 841-1188 if you believe you might benefit from a procedure such as these. Have a great day!

Receding gums (also known as gingival recession) is the gradual loss of gum tissue, and if left untreated it can result in exposure of the tooth root, between the gum and the tooth. It can involve one tooth (single recession-type defect) or many teeth (multiple recession-type defects). It can affect the look of the teeth, and is also linked to tooth sensitivity. Exposure of the tooth root can be treated by cosmetic surgery, or gum grafting. Grafting involves taking tissue from another place in the mouth, or using donated tissue (allograft), and stitching it over the area of the exposed root. Procedures used in gum grafting include (but aren't limited to): free gingival grafts, coronally advanced flaps, acellular dermal matrix grafts and laterally positioned flaps. Below are several examples of before and after photos of patients we have treated these last 3 to 4-months.
