We talk about this all the time with our patience. We are very dedicated to educating patients about the importances of their oral health and this systemic effects on the body.

A new study has found that Porphyromonas gingivalis—a major bacterium involved in chronic gum disease—was detected in heart tissue collected from patients undergoing cardiac surgery.

Researchers found that higher levels of this oral bacterium were associated with increased atrial fibrosis, a buildup of scar-like tissue in the heart. This type of structural change can disrupt the heart's electrical signaling system and may increase the risk of atrial fibrillation (AFib), the most common form of irregular heartbeat.

The findings suggest that periodontal disease may affect more than just the gums. Scientists believe that chronic inflammation and the movement of oral bacteria into the bloodstream could contribute to changes in cardiovascular tissues over time.

While more research is needed to confirm cause and effect, the study adds to growing evidence linking oral health and heart health.

Healthy gums are not just important for keeping teeth—they may play a role in supporting overall cardiovascular well-being.
