No crowns. That's what one of my patients asked for when she came in to have a tooth rebuilt.

So I rebuilt her tooth with biomimetic dentistry, which means building it back up in layers that act like a natural tooth.

Between those layers, I used reinforced fiber, similar to construction rebar before pouring concrete. The fiber gives the filling strength from the inside, the way rebar does for a foundation.

She kept her own tooth, without a crown.

Three students work in my office. It’s how I started and how I’m paying it forward.

Right now, I'm teaching them sterilization, x-rays, polishing, impressions, and chair-side assisting.

I'm hard on them. I run a feedback form that grades them on each skill, and I don't soften my notes. I think a lot of training in healthcare has gotten too gentle, and the patients pay for it later.

But I'm hard on them because I was once where they are. I had mentors who pushed me, who handed me tooth-carving books and told me to replicate the work in wax, who gave me access to their offices after hours to learn the business side, who told me I should aim higher than I was aiming.

Those mentors changed my career. I'm trying to do the same for the students who come through my office.

If dental offices have ever made you feel like a number, I want you to know what your first visit looks like here in Las Vegas.

When you walk into Essential Dental, someone greets you by name. Your file is already pulled, and most of your paperwork is done online before you arrive, so you are not stuck at a counter with a clipboard.

We bring you back to the treatment room within a few minutes, because nobody enjoys sitting in a waiting room.

We do not double-book, so the time on the schedule belongs to you. New patient visits are a full hour, and I would rather hear your whole story than rush it.

I named this practice Essential Dental on purpose, because the clean room, the good morning at the door, and the time to ask your questions are what make a visit feel cared for.

Her comfort came first, even though I would have chosen differently.

I knew this was going to be a longer procedure, and I would have preferred to use the epinephrine. She asked me not to, and I respected her request. My goal was for her to be comfortable.

She was grateful I honored that, and she was able to finish the procedure without any problems.

Tooth meridian charts aren't something they teach you in dental school.

Most dentists, including me when I started, would tell you the connection between a specific tooth and another organ is folklore, not medicine. And depending on which framework you're looking at, some of it probably is.

But there's a pattern that's hard to ignore once you start seeing patients with chronic illness.

I don't claim to fully understand the mechanism. What I can tell you is that the pattern shows up enough that it deserves attention, especially when a patient's functional medicine doctor or naturopath is asking the right questions.
