CAN A DENTIST TREAT SLEEP APNEA? YES!
Yes, your sleep apnea oral appliance solution for snoring can be treated at my Lansing, MI dental office. I have the training, skills, and experience to treat mild to moderate cases of sleep apnea for my patients. To treat this condition, I may recommend a custom-made oral appliance. But first, it’s crucial to learn and fully understand the patient’s condition in order to get a full grasp of how we will move forward with treatment.

Hello, this is Dr. Jonathan J. Bechtel and I understand and empathize with the discomfort and distress that sleep apnea can cause which is why we’re here to offer our help to all those affected living in Lansing and the surrounding area.

An Alternative to CPAP For Patients With Sleep Apnea
I focus on providing conservative, biocompatible treatment options that uphold our holistic wellness standards. While CPAP (Continuous Positive Air Pressure) machine is the preferred method of treatment for severe Obstructive Sleep Apnea, many people cannot tolerate sleeping with the machine. For patients who cannot tolerate a CPAP, I can provide a custom oral appliance option. Oral appliance therapy is an effective, non-invasive treatment that fits easily into your lifestyle. Some patients who do tolerate their CPAP may just want a better option for travel, so my oral appliance option is very helpful to them.

Oral appliances have high success rates when it comes to treating mild to moderate Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). They are effective for about 70% of mild cases and 60% of moderate cases. These appliances are customized for you and promote the proper positioning of the tongue and tissues around the throat during sleep.

Sleep Apnea Oral Appliance: SomnoDent®
I use a SomnoDent® sleep apnea oral appliance at my practice, which is a premium, custom-fitted dental device developed for the treatment of snoring and obstructive sleep apnea. SomnoDent® oral devices are clinically proven, safe, and FDA cleared for mild-to-moderate Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). It is an effective, comfortable, and durable alternative to CPAP therapy or corrective surgery. By simply wearing a SomnoDent® oral appliance while sleeping, your lower jaw (mandible) will be moved forward into a comfortable position, allowing relaxation of the tissues at the back of your throat and ensuring the base of your tongue does not collapse and block your airway, giving you a safe and soundless sleep.

Oral Appliance Therapy at our Dental Practice in Lansing, MI:
Your SomnoDent® custom oral appliance will be created using physical or digital impressions and models of your teeth. I will send these impressions and models to our trusted dental lab where your oral appliance is made. We’ll set up a follow-up appointment once your oral appliance has been created for a fitting. I will make any adjustments necessary to ensure maximum comfort and effectiveness. A member of my team will go over care and cleaning instructions. After your fitting appointment, we may refer you to a sleep study clinic for observation.

Sleep Apnea Diagnosis & Treatment in Lansing, MI:
Sleep apnea is a common, yet potentially serious condition in which an individual’s sleep is continually disrupted as a result of air being unable to flow into the lungs, preventing the person from being able to breathe regularly. Severe sleep apnea can lead to highly concerning and potentially life-threatening complications such as cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes.

Contact Us For Your Sleep Apnea & Snoring Treatment:
If you believe that you may be experiencing symptoms of sleep apnea, we urge you to contact our office as soon as possible at 517-882-7132 to schedule your appointment and start your journey to better wellness.

I have successfully treated sleep apnea with oral appliance therapy since 2008 and many patients experience relief from the associated symptoms and improve their overall health with a custom oral appliance device.

Our holistically inclined, health centered dentistry office in Lansing, MI serves patients living throughout Lansing, Holt, Okemos, Mason, Grand Ledge, Dewitt, Haslett, Williamston, St. Johns, Charlotte, Eaton Rapids, East Lansing, Potterville, and other surrounding areas.

🌿 Holistically & Biologically Inclined Dentistry — Focused on Your 2026 Health Goals ✨

It’s refreshing to see so many people becoming more intentional about their health, wellness, and the connection between oral health and the rest of the body. More than ever, patients are seeking holistic and biologic solutions, and I remain deeply committed to providing dentistry that supports whole-body well-being.

I feel incredibly blessed to continue practicing holistically and biologically inclined dentistry that is health-focused and patient-centered. My goal has always been to support the integrated health of the entire body, helping my patients reach their long-term health and wellness goals through thoughtful, conservative dental care.

I remain focused on providing comprehensive dental treatment using minimally invasive procedures whenever possible. I truly believe that minimally invasive holistic and biologic dentistry helps patients live longer, healthier, and happier lives. I treat each patient as a whole person, and every visit is guided by my personal, undivided attention.

What Is Holistically and Biologically Inclined Dentistry?
In the care I provide, holistic means recognizing that the health of the mouth and the health of the body cannot be separated. Biologic means that I continually seek better ways to help individuals get and stay healthy, using biocompatible materials and techniques that emphasize durability, longevity, and conservation of natural tooth structure.

The Impact of Holistic Dentistry on the Body
All of my treatments are designed to support overall wellness, with benefits that extend well beyond oral health, including:
• Treating infections and diseases that can spread from the mouth to other systems or organs
• Providing conservative, minimally invasive treatments
• Preventing mercury exposure by offering mercury-free filling services
• Reducing exposure to irritants and potential allergens found in traditional dentistry
• Diagnosing and providing preventive care for chronic conditions that affect the gums and teeth

Mercury-Safe Dentistry
My practice is dedicated to mercury-free dentistry. We do not place mercury fillings and are certified to provide mercury-safe removal services for patients throughout the Lansing area.

IAOMT Certification & Training
I am SMART-certified through the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT). This certification reflects advanced training in safe mercury removal and a thorough understanding of the harmful effects mercury can have on the body.

Minimally Invasive Biomimetic Dentistry
I am fully committed to restorative dentistry that aligns with holistic wellness principles. My team and I are proud to offer biologic alternatives to traditional crowns, utilizing minimally invasive biomimetic restorations.

Biomimetic dentistry uses porcelain inlays and onlays, along with stress-reduced composite restorations, to restore the natural biomechanics of damaged teeth. Traditional restorative options, such as metal crowns, gold crowns, amalgam fillings, and porcelain-fused crowns, do not provide the same conservative benefits.

Dental Ozone Therapy
At my Lansing practice, Dental Ozone Therapy is incorporated into many procedures, including gum disease treatment, restorative dentistry, and oral surgery. Ozone therapy enhances healing, supports oral health, and provides a powerful, conservative defense against harmful bacteria.

I continue to see growing interest in ozone therapy because it is holistic, painless, minimally invasive, and can significantly reduce healing time. It has become one of the most effective tools used in holistic dentistry today.

Join Our Holistic & Biologic Dentistry Family in 2026
Being a holistically and biologically inclined dental practice means we take dental care one step further. Your mouth is deeply connected to your body, mind, and overall well-being, and my goal is to support that connection at every level.

My dental practice is located in Lansing, providing patients a convenient location for all your dental needs. We serve patients living throughout Lansing, MI, Holt, Okemos, Mason, Grand Ledge, Dewitt, Haslett, Williamston, St. Johns, Charlotte, Eaton Rapids, East Lansing, and Potterville.

🦃🎄Holiday Stress & TMJ Pain – Let’s Talk Relief 😌
As the holidays approach, I want to talk about something I see every year, an uptick in jaw pain, tension headaches, and facial discomfort triggered by holiday stress. Many people don’t realize that the stress of the season can aggravate an already sensitive chewing system and bring on the symptoms of TMJ Disorder (also called TMD).

TMJ Disorder affects the temporomandibular joints, which allow your jaw to move. When these joints aren’t functioning properly, it can create a domino effect of symptoms: migraines, jaw soreness, neck stiffness, earaches, facial pain, and even trouble chewing. And unfortunately, stress is one of the biggest contributors.

The good news? You don’t have to just “deal with it.” At my Lansing, MI practice, I offer a conservative, biologic approach to treating TMJ that focuses on whole-body wellness. As a Level 4 graduate of the OBI Foundation for Bioesthetic Dentistry, I’m trained to identify and treat the root cause of TMJ dysfunction, not just the symptoms.

Through gentle, minimally invasive care, we can stabilize the jaw joints, reduce inflammation, and help restore harmony to your bite and your life. This means fewer flare-ups, less discomfort, and a better quality of life, not just for the holidays, but for years to come.

In the meantime, here are a few helpful tips:
✅ Limit chewing gum or hard, crunchy foods
✅ Avoid clenching your jaw, especially while wrapping gifts or rushing through to-do lists
✅ Use stress-relief techniques like deep breathing, stretching, or a short walk
✅ Be mindful of posture, don’t cradle your phone or hunch at the laptop
✅ Prep soft, nourishing meals that are easy on the jaw

If you’re dealing with TMD symptoms, please consider reaching out. Let’s work together to give you relief and restore comfort in a way that supports your overall health. I’d be honored to help.

🎁🦷Wishing you a peaceful, pain-free holiday season!

Break the Habits That Make TMJ Pain Worse!
TMJ disorder affects millions of people, often leaving them with facial pain, headaches, and difficulty with everyday activities like eating or even sleeping. These symptoms can spread beyond the jaw, impacting the neck, shoulders, and back, making life far less enjoyable than it should be.

As a Level IV graduate of the OBI Foundation for Bioesthetic Dentistry, I have advanced training that allows me to diagnose and treat TMJ disorder at its root cause. My greatest reward is seeing patients who once lived in constant pain now smiling, sleeping, and thriving, finally free to enjoy life again.

While professional treatment is key, certain bad habits may be adding to your discomfort. Breaking them can be a powerful step toward healing.

Habits to Avoid
• Using your teeth as tools
Opening packages or bottles with your teeth strains your jaw joints. Instead, keep a small tool or scissors handy, it will protect both your teeth and your TMJs.

• Teeth grinding
Stress often fuels grinding, which can be devastating for your jaw. If this sounds familiar, I can create a custom oral appliance or nightguard to protect your smile and relieve pressure.

• Nail biting & chewing non-food items
Chewing on nails, ice, pens, or even gum creates unnatural strain on your jaw and can worsen TMD pain. Breaking these habits can reduce daily stress on your joints.

Supporting Your Healing at Home
Beyond breaking bad habits, gentle jaw exercises, improved sleep positions, and a soft-food diet during recovery can make a significant difference. In my practice, I provide personalized demonstrations, tips, and natural alternatives for pain relief, all designed to help you heal without relying on long-term medications.

Getting Back to Life—Pain Free
TMJ pain doesn’t have to control your life. With advanced, proven treatment protocols and compassionate care, I’ve seen patients move from years of suffering to finally living with comfort, confidence, and joy.

If you’re ready to explore a path to lasting relief, I would be honored to guide you there.

Sincerely,
Jonathan J. Bechtel, DDS

A Holistic & Conservative Path to TMJ Relief 😌🌿

Hello! I’m Dr. Jonathan J. Bechtel, DDS, and I’m deeply grateful to serve patients across the Lansing community with a health-centered, holistic approach to dentistry. One condition I see all too often is TMJ Disorder, also called TMD, which can be incredibly painful and frustrating. The good news? There are gentle, biologic ways to find relief without aggressive treatments or full-mouth reconstruction.

Many patients come to me after suffering for years with migraines, jaw pain, earaches, facial tension, or unexplained neck stiffness, often unaware that their symptoms stem from a dysfunctional chewing system. They’ve been told surgery or invasive orthodontics are their only options. I’m here to tell you: that’s not always true.

Since opening my practice in 2008, I’ve focused on holistic, biologic dentistry because I believe that oral health is inseparable from whole-body health. I’m a proud Level 4 graduate of the OBI Foundation for Bioesthetic Dentistry, an advanced distinction shared by fewer than 500 dental professionals worldwide. My training allows me to treat TMJ disorders in a way that’s precise, minimally invasive, and centered around restoring natural function.

Bioesthetic Dentistry is built on the idea that your dental system was designed to work beautifully, when it’s in harmony. Rather than just treating symptoms, I look at the root cause of your discomfort. That often means stabilizing the jaw joint, calming overworked muscles, and restoring teeth to their ideal shape and position, without unnecessary drilling or hardware.

My approach to treating TMD is always guided by three core goals:
1. Stabilize the jaw joint to reduce muscle spasms and inflammation.
2. Reestablish proper bite function so your teeth and jaw work together in balance.
3. Conservatively restore your natural tooth anatomy to support long-term comfort and strength.

I use biologic and holistic techniques that preserve your natural teeth whenever possible. This leads to a stronger, healthier smile and helps avoid costly, extensive procedures down the line.

At Bechtel Dentistry, we don’t believe in quick fixes or masking symptoms. We believe in getting to the source, honoring the body’s design, and helping you feel truly well again. 😊

If you’re struggling with chronic headaches, clenching, clicking jaws, or facial tension, let’s talk. It’s an honor to be trusted with your care, and I would love to help you explore a gentle path forward.

Bechtel Dentistry is honored to extend our TMJ/TMD expertise for patients in Lansing, Holt, Okemos, Mason, Grand Ledge, Dewitt, Haslett, Williamston, St. Johns, Charlotte, Eaton Rapids, East Lansing, and Potterville.

National Root Canal Awareness Week for 2025 is coming up - May 13-17th, 2025. I’d certainly like to join in and take this opportunity to raise awareness about a GENTLER, less invasive approach that may help you avoid having to have root canals with MINIMALLY-INVASIVE BIOMIMETIC DENTISTRY.

Biomimetic Dentistry can restore a damaged or broken tooth in a minimally-invasive manner, helping to preserve the integrity of the tooth by minimizing the removal of tooth structure. This in turn reduces the risk of the tooth needing a root canal procedure.

At my dental practice in Lansing, Michigan, I am committed to providing restorative dental services that uphold our holistic and biologic wellness standards. I provide a biologic alternative to conventional crowns with biomimetic, minimally invasive restorations.

Biomimetic Dentistry is a superior form of dentistry that’s been proven to provide better long-term oral health than traditional dental techniques. Dentists who have completed advanced biomimetic training are qualified to perform these unique and improved procedures. I have successfully completed extensive training, including ongoing continuing education course work to sharpen my skills and acquire the latest advancements in this special area of dentistry.

Preventing Root Canals:
Biomimetic Dentistry is an important part of how I practice dentistry. As a Biomimetic Dentist, I use Biomimetic Dentistry techniques to treat teeth with large cavities thereby helping prevent root canals in badly decayed or infected teeth when possible. I strive to conserve as much healthy tooth structure as possible and preserve the structure and function of your natural teeth. I am fully committed to tooth-conserving dentistry using several biomimetic techniques, including removing as little actual tooth as possible when treating cavities and infections.

I use natural methods to fight the bacteria invasion, including Dental Ozone Therapy in our treatments that can hyper-oxygenate tissue, which promotes healing. With our minimally invasive procedures, you experience less pain and discomfort, longer-lasting restorations, and an overall healthier mouth.

The Benefits of Biomimetic Dentistry:
Teeth that are restored with the biomimetic approach are at significantly lower risk for requiring endodontic therapy, can avoid crowns, and reduce the risk of needing extraction. Biomimetic Dentistry allows our team to restore teeth with a minimally invasive tooth structure restoration method that mimics the natural design of a tooth. Biomimetic methods offer the incredible benefit of being a more cost-effective option than traditional restorative treatments.

Approaching oral health with Biomimetic Dentistry dramatically reduces the need to remove tooth structure or grind them down for crowns. I truly care about your long-term oral health.
Biomimetic Dentistry is very conservative, which means you have stronger, longer-lasting teeth throughout your lifetime. If you prefer biological or holistic dentistry to support your long-term oral health and wellness, the principles of Biomimetic Dentistry will be a good fit for you. I believe Biomimetic Dentistry is better dentistry and better for your overall health.

Contact Us For Minimally Invasive Biomimetic Dentistry Treatments:
If you have any questions about our minimally invasive biomimetic dental services or would like to schedule an appointment, I invite you to contact us at 517-882-7132 to schedule your appointment and start your journey to better wellness.

Our holistically inclined dentistry offers comprehensive treatments that promote overall wellness for our patients living throughout Lansing, Holt, Okemos, Mason, Grand Ledge, Dewitt, Haslett, Williamston, St. Johns, Charlotte, Eaton Rapids, East Lansing, Potterville, and other surrounding areas.

03/15/2025

Professional dental cleanings are crucial for maintaining a healthy mouth, but if you’re among the 50-80% of American adults who experience dental anxiety, you may avoid these essential visits. Thankfully, there’s now a gentler, more holistic way to clean your teeth—Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT). This innovative, non-invasive approach aligns with holistic and biologic dentistry, providing a natural solution for patients who prioritize their overall well-being.

The Holistic Approach to Dental Cleanings:
I’m Dr. Jonathan J. Bechtel, DDS, a holistic and biologic dentist dedicated to offering natural, patient-centered solutions in Lansing, Michigan. My approach to dentistry emphasizes preserving the body’s natural structures, reducing unnecessary interventions, and supporting whole-body health. Guided Biofilm Therapy is a perfect example of this commitment, offering a minimally invasive, pain-free alternative to traditional dental cleanings.

What Is Guided Biofilm Therapy?
Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT), also known as Airflow Therapy, is a systematic, comfortable, and effective method for removing biofilm—the sticky layer of bacteria and microorganisms that accumulate on teeth. Left untreated, biofilm hardens into plaque and tartar, contributing to gum disease, cavities, and even systemic health issues.

Unlike traditional methods that use sharp instruments to scrape the teeth, GBT utilizes a warm water stream, air, and a fine, natural powder to gently dislodge and remove biofilm. This process is not only effective but also significantly more comfortable for patients, making it ideal for those with dental sensitivity or anxiety.

Why Choose Guided Biofilm Therapy?
GBT aligns with the principles of holistic and biologic dentistry by prioritizing gentle, natural solutions that work with your body rather than against it.

This method supports oral health while minimizing discomfort, making it an excellent choice for those seeking a more mindful approach to dental care. Patients who may benefit from GBT include those who:

• Have sensitive teeth and gums.

• Experience dental anxiety and avoid traditional cleanings.

• Prefer a more natural and conservative approach to dental care.

• Seek a pain-free alternative to traditional scaling.

• Have a history of gum disease and need gentle, effective maintenance.

• Struggle with stains from coffee, tea, wine, or to***co.

With GBT, patients experience a refreshing, non-invasive cleaning process that leaves their teeth feeling smooth and healthy, without the discomfort often associated with traditional methods.

A Natural Solution for Holistic Health Advocates:
Holistic health is about more than just treating symptoms—it’s about nurturing the body as a whole. Because oral health is closely linked to systemic wellness, choosing a biologic approach like Guided Biofilm Therapy can help reduce inflammation and promote overall health. By eliminating harmful bacteria in a gentle way, we can support not just your teeth and gums but your entire well-being.

Schedule Your Guided Biofilm Therapy Appointment:
We are always welcoming new patients! At Bechtel Dentistry, we are committed to providing natural, biologic dental solutions that align with your holistic health goals.

Take the next step toward a healthier, more natural dental experience. Contact our office today at (517) 882-7132 to schedule your Guided Biofilm Therapy appointment.

Sincerely,
