Dry mouth isn’t just uncomfortable, it can seriously affect your dental health. Many common medications like allergy meds, antidepressants, ADHS meds, blood pressure medications, pain meds, and muscle relaxers can reduce saliva, along with dehydration, mouth breathing, stress, caffeine, alcohol, smoking, and certain medical conditions.
When saliva is low, your mouth can’t neutralize acids or control bacteria as well, increasing the risk of cavities, gum disease, bone loss around the teeth, infections, and even root canals, tooth loss, or implants.
If you struggle with dry mouth, sip water throughout the day, chew sugar-free & aspartame-free gum, avoid caffeine and alcohol when possible, use alcohol-free or dry-mouth rinses, consider a humidifier at night, and let your dentist know about any medications you take so they can help protect your teeth before damage starts.
Not sure if you have dry mouth? Do you wake up at night with a dry mouth? Do you take any antidepressants, antihistamines, blood pressure drugs, pain relievers, muscle relaxants, diuretics, or ADHD meds? You may be causing damage without even realizing it.
Most importantly, get checkups at least every 6 months so we can catch the damage before it’s too late to save your tooth!
