From “whale tail” to full mobility 👅✨

This is a severe tongue-tie lingual restriction in a 13-year-old patient.

➡️ In the before image, you can see the tight restriction, often described as a “whale tail” appearance, limiting normal tongue movement.

➡️ A lingual frenectomy was performed to release the tissue and restore function.

➡️ The final image shows sutures placed to support proper healing.

Why does this matter?

A restricted tongue can impact:
• Speech
• Eating & swallowing
• Oral development
• Even airway and overall function

While these images may look a little intense, this is a quick procedure with meaningful, lasting benefits 💚

If you’ve ever noticed limited tongue movement or have concerns, we’re here to help guide you every step of the way.

A closer look at what a tongue tie can really look like 👀

In the before, you’ll notice the tongue has that “heart shape” at the tip, this is a common sign of a restricted frenulum (tongue tie).

In the after, the restriction has been released, allowing for better mobility and function.

Why does this matter?
Because tongue ties can impact more than you might think:
• Speech development
• Feeding (in infants + even older kids)
• Oral function + movement
• Overall comfort

Every case is different, but improving mobility can make a big difference in a child’s daily life 💚

If you’ve ever noticed a tongue that looks similar or have concerns, we’re always here to help guide you.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Reviews like this make our whole day!

Knowing that our little patients felt comfortable, cared for, and actually didn’t want to leave the dentist?! 🥹🦷 That’s about the biggest compliment we could receive!

Creating positive dental experiences for kids, and making things easy and comfortable for their parents, is exactly why we do what we do. 💚

To the sweet family who shared these kind words and photos with us, thank you for trusting our team with your little smiles! We’re so happy you had such a wonderful experience. ✨

Some smiles are extra special. 🥹💚

Years ago, Mom was the little patient sitting in Dr. Erin’s chair… and now she’s bringing her own little one to see Dr. Erin. Talk about a full-circle moment! 🥹

There’s something incredibly special about watching our PDL families grow up, start families of their own, and then trust us with the next generation of tiny smiles. That kind of trust means more to us than we could ever put into words. 💚

From one generation of smiles to the next… this is what makes our hearts so happy.

Thank you for continuing to make Dr. Erin and PDL part of your family’s story. 💚

Happy Labor Day!

Behind every healthy smile is an incredible team that works hard, supports one another, and still knows how to have a little fun along the way! 🦷✨

We recently stepped away from the office for some much-needed team bonding at Fleet Feet, and we had the BEST time together! 👟🤍 Days like this are such a great reminder that the relationships we build outside the office make us even stronger inside it.

This Labor Day, we’re especially thankful for our amazing team and all of the hard work, heart, and dedication they bring to our patients and families every single day.

Work hard. Laugh together. Grow together. 💚

Not all teeth are supposed to be there… 👀

This is called a supernumerary tooth, an extra tooth that develops in addition to the normal set.

While it may not always be obvious right away, these can cause:
• Delayed eruption of permanent teeth
• Crowding or shifting
• Orthodontic complications
• Discomfort or irritation

In this case, the extra tooth needed to be removed to allow for proper development and alignment 🦷✨

The takeaway?
Sometimes what looks like just crowding or a tooth coming in funny can actually be something more.

That’s why routine exams and X-rays are so important, they help us catch things early and create the best plan for your child’s smile 💚

A small procedure can make a BIG difference. 🦷💚

A maxillary frenectomy releases a tight or restrictive frenum, the band of tissue that connects the upper lip to the gums.

When this tissue is overly restrictive, it can affect lip mobility and, depending on the child’s age and individual needs, may contribute to concerns with feeding, oral hygiene, or spacing between the front teeth.

By releasing the restriction, we can help improve the movement and function of the upper lip while supporting your child’s overall oral health and development.

Every child is different, which is why evaluation by a trained provider is so important. Our team at Pediatric Dentistry of Lakeland can evaluate your child and help determine whether a frenectomy may be beneficial for their individual needs. 💚
