For National Women’s History Day, we want to highlight Lucy Hobbs Taylor, the first American woman to graduate from dental school with a Degree of Doctor in Dental Surgery. Born on March 14, 1833, Lucy became a school teacher for 10 years, then moved to Ohio to pursue a degree in dentistry. She was denied entry to the Eclectic Medical College and the Ohio College of Dentistry. After an apprenticeship and opening her own practice, she was later allowed to enroll at the Ohio College of Dentistry. In 1866, she became the first woman in the world to receive a doctorate in dentistry. Today, the American Association of Women Dentists recognizes outstanding women in the dental profession with the Lucy Hobbs Taylor Award, the most prestigious honor the organization grants.

Gum disease is one of the most common oral health problems! Prevention is the best way to minimize your risk of developing gum disease. Maintaining a thorough oral hygiene routine, using a mouth rinse, eating a balanced diet, and getting regular dental cleanings are steps you can take for your teeth to prevent gum disease. Treatments for gum disease vary depending on the severity. Antibiotics can be prescribed to eliminate infection and inflammation. In other cases, scaling, root planing, or gum grafting may be needed.

Prevent gum disease and give our office a call to schedule your cleaning with us!

February is Gum Disease Awareness Month!

So, what is gum disease? Gum disease is an infection in the gums that gets worse over time. Early-stage gum disease (gingivitis) includes swollen, bleeding gums, however not everyone experiences symptoms. It is reversible with timely treatment. Advanced gum disease occurs when the gum’s inner layer pulls away from the teeth and forms pockets. It is defined by the loss of bone supporting the teeth. You can avoid gum disease in large part by brushing and flossing your teeth daily and getting regular dental cleanings. To schedule your appointment with us, visit our website!
