A root canal is needed when infection or inflammation develops in the pulp tissue of the tooth. Pulp tissue contains blood vessels, connective tissues, and nerve cells which can cause intense pain. Over time this discomfort may subside or at least be reduced for a short period of time. On the other hand, an infected tooth will not go back to its normal state without treatment; it might even lead to a dental abscess and systemic issues in other body parts!
