That opening in the roof of the mouth is a cleft palate, where the palate failed to fully fuse during development. 😳

It means the nasal cavity and the mouth are directly connected. Food and liquid can travel up into the nose, and breathing and speech are all affected. Usually repaired surgically in childhood, but not always.
