Crowding is more than a cosmetic concern. When teeth overlap or erupt out of position, they can be harder to brush and floss properly, increasing the risk of plaque buildup, cavities and gum problems. Crowding can also affect how your bite functions and lead to uneven wear on your teeth.

Scheduling an orthodontic consultation sooner allows us to evaluate the crowding, determine whether it may worsen and recommend the best time to begin treatment. Addressing crowding at the right time may also provide more treatment options and help prevent additional complications. An evaluation does not always mean treatment needs to start immediately, but it gives you a clear plan for protecting your smile!

An orthodontic evaluation at age 7 doesn’t mean braces at age 7!

Around this age, children have a mix of baby and permanent teeth, giving an orthodontist an opportunity to evaluate how the teeth, jaws, and bite are developing. We can look for concerns such as crowding, crossbites, spacing, and problems with jaw growth before they become more difficult to address.

For many children, the best plan is simply to monitor their growth until the timing is right for treatment. Early evaluation is about knowing what to watch for and when to act, not starting braces before they’re needed.
