🧠 Alzheimer’s May Be Linked to Gum Bacteria — New Research Suggests
It sounds unbelievable, but scientists are discovering that Alzheimer’s disease may not start in the brain at all…
It may begin in your mouth.
Researchers have found Porphyromonas gingivalis — the bacteria behind chronic gum disease — in the brains of people who died with Alzheimer’s.
🐭 In lab studies, mice infected with this bacteria developed classic Alzheimer’s signs, including amyloid beta buildup, a key protein tied to the disease. Even more alarming: toxic enzymes from the bacteria were found in people showing early brain changes before symptoms began, suggesting the infection may trigger damage years ahead.
💊 There’s new hope for treatment too. An experimental drug called COR388 has shown promising results in reducing both the bacteria and amyloid buildup in animal studies. More research is needed, but the findings point to something big:
✨ Alzheimer’s may have an infectious component — not just a degenerative one.
And keeping your gums healthy may protect more than your smile… it might help protect your brain.
