🇺🇸A rare dental anomaly surprised doctors in India after a fully formed canine tooth was discovered in the upper part of a 16-year-old boy’s eye socket.
The teenager initially noticed painless swelling above his left eye. A CT scan at Aravind Eye Hospital revealed an ectopic tooth - a tooth that develops outside its usual anatomical position.
The tooth was successfully removed, and the medical team reported that, to their knowledge, this may be the first documented case of an ectopic tooth in the upper eye socket.
Although ectopic teeth have been reported in other unusual locations, including the nasal cavity and maxillary sinus, this case highlights the complexity of dental development and the importance of advanced imaging in identifying rare anatomical findings.
The case was published in the medical journal Ophthalmology in June 2026.
