Risk of death from Covid, due to complications from oral bacteria, fungus, and viruses. PLEASE READ.

Most people don’t associate mouths, teeth and gums with their over-all health. But that’s a big mistake! Our mouths are normally carry all kinds of bacteria including the ones that cause Strep Throat, Bronchitis, and Pneumonia. When we are healthy, dangerous oral bacteria are normally present in low numbers. But with poor oral hygiene, they grow and can cause serious health problems.

It’s well-documented that oral conditions can affect many organs in the body, such as your heart, your lungs, and even your brain. But there is yet another deadly risk that no one is talking about:

The risk of death from Covid, due to complications from oral bacteria, fungus, and viruses.

In the most serious cases of Covid, patients are hospitalized and treated. But some of these life-saving treatments such as Remdesivir and Baricitinib, cannot be given to patients with moderate to severe infections of any kind. That means if you have a mouth condition, antibiotics need to be given to reduce the infection before the life-saving drugs are administered. But, time is not on our side with Covid, it acts swiftly on the body. To reduce the likelihood of death or long-term effects, Covid needs to be treated as soon as possible.

Even though the hospital can administer antibiotics for the mouth infection, there is no guarantee that it can be controlled well-enough to give the life-saving medications. Worse yet, in the unfortunate event that you must be put on a ventilator, oral infections will likely worsen or begin. The lack of saliva and drying conditions caused by being intubated contribute to the secondary infections that often result in the worst outcome. So a clean healthy mouth gives you the best shot, at the best outcome.

If you aren’t current with your dental visits, see a dentist immediately to be sure your mouth is healthy and free from decay and gum disease. That will reduce your risk of having complications with Covid--from your mouth. A clean mouth may also help reduce the spread of Covid to others, from people who carry Covid, but show no symptoms. Use antiseptic rinses like Listerine, hydrogen peroxide, and Chlorhexidene (By Dentist Rx Only) daily. Floss at least once a day, brush twice a day, and see your dentist!

Hi there! Dr. Rivas here. We try to keep up with all the latest info about Covid to help keep our patients and staff safe. This article shows that mouth rinses might help in reducing Covid exposure. Nothing conclusive yet, but I will keep you posted when more information surfaces. In the meanwhile, use your favorite mouthwash, floss your teeth, and brush with an electric toothbrush!
