Sounds crazy, right? 🤍 I'm a dentist, and I don't touch my toothbrush for the first 30 minutes of my day.

Most people wake up and immediately brush, but overnight your mouth builds up bacteria and toxins. If you brush first thing, you're just moving that around. So I tongue scrape first to remove that coating, then I oil pull for a few minutes while I'm getting ready, and then I drink water to hydrate. 🌿

By the time I brush, my mouth is actually ready for it. This one shift changed my energy, my breath, and honestly, how I show up for my patients.

What's the first thing you do when you wake up? Tell me below, and try tongue scraping tomorrow morning before you brush. ☀️

When healing stops short.

A cavitation is an area inside the jawbone where healthy, dense bone never fully grew back. Instead of solid bone, there's a softer, hollow space with poor blood flow. Cavitations are found most often at old extraction sites, especially where wisdom teeth were removed.

After an extraction, a blood clot forms and the bone is supposed to rebuild from there. When that process is interrupted, from things like reduced blood flow, trauma, or a body that wasn't ready to heal, the surface can close over while the inside stays unhealed. On a standard 2D x-ray, that dense outer layer can hide what's underneath, which is why 3D CBCT imaging gives a much clearer look.

Not every cavitation affects overall health, but poorly healed bone can hold low-grade inflammation your immune system keeps responding to. As a biological dentist, I look at your imaging, your history, and how you feel, because your jaw is part of your whole body.

This is a sample from a patient’s mouth under the microscope, and yes, everything you see moving is alive. When I look at a sample this way, I can see what kind of bacteria are there and how active they are. That tells me a lot more about gum health than a visual exam alone, and it helps me decide on a treatment plan that actually fits what’s going on.

Most people have never seen their own mouth microbiome. Once they do, they tend to ask a lot more questions, which is exactly what I want.

Would you want to see yours? Tell me in the comments. And if you’re ready to book, comment APPOINTMENT and my team will reach out.

Here's a dental tip that has nothing to do with your toothbrush. 🤍

You can brush beautifully, floss every night, and still struggle with cavities if you're eating close to bedtime. Your mouth turns acidic after eating, and while you sleep, there's less saliva around to bring it back into balance. 🌿

One simple shift can make a real difference. I've seen patients stop getting new cavities from this change alone. No new product, no extra step, just timing.

Try it for a month and notice how you feel. Save this as your nighttime reminder. 🌙

If you've ever had a filling or crown that didn't last as long as you hoped, you're not alone. 🤍 And it usually isn't anything you did wrong.

Dental work lives inside a whole system. An infection underneath, a bite that's slightly off, a mouth that runs dry or acidic, or a material that doesn't sit well with your body can all quietly shorten its life.

That's why I don't just look at the tooth. I look at everything around it, so the work we do supports you for years, not just for now. 🌿

Save this, and next time you're in my chair, ask me what your bite and your bacteria are telling us. 🦷

This is a pattern I see constantly and it is one that breaks my heart a little every time because these are the patients who have been told they are fine for years while quietly running on empty. 🌿

High achieving women who hold everything together, who show up fully for their careers, their families, and everyone around them, are almost never the ones anyone thinks to screen for airway issues. They do not complain loudly enough. They compensate too well. And because they are functioning at a high level on the outside nobody looks deeper at what it is costing them on the inside.

The fatigue, the brain fog, the anxiety, the waking up unrefreshed no matter how many hours they sleep. These are not personality traits or stress responses. For many of these women they are airway symptoms that have never been identified.

The dental chair is where this conversation starts and most of them have never had it. DM me to book an appointment and let us take a look at what your airway has been trying to tell you. 🌿

This is one of the most important conversations I have with patients who have a history of breast cancer or who are concerned about their risk and it is one that most providers have never initiated with them. 🌿

The research connecting anaerobic bacteria from root canal treated teeth to breast cancer tissue is not new but it is consistently overlooked. Studies have found the same bacteria that live inside root canal teeth present in breast cancer tumors and while the conversation in conventional dentistry has been slow to catch up the biological dentistry community has been paying attention to this connection for years. For a patient who has had a root canal and is managing or concerned about breast health this is a conversation that absolutely belongs in their dental appointment.

We do not make decisions for our patients. We give them the full picture and let them decide what to do with that information. That is what informed consent actually looks like.

DM me to book an appointment and let us evaluate what is happening in your mouth as part of your whole body health picture. 🌿

I know this one feels backwards. 🤍 Most of us were taught to brush right after eating.

But when you eat or drink something acidic, your enamel softens for a little while. Your saliva is smart, it works to bring your mouth back into balance and re-harden that enamel. It just needs time. 🌿

So I brush before breakfast, eat, and then rinse with water. If I want to brush again, I give it 30 minutes.

Timing matters more than you think. Share this with someone who brushes right after their morning coffee. ☕

What if a sensitive tooth didn't automatically mean you were headed for a root canal? 🦷

If you've ever had a tooth that zings with cold or aches when you bite, you know how quickly your mind jumps to the worst. Every situation is different, and some teeth truly do need more treatment. But in certain cases, there may be a gentler first step worth considering.

Ozone therapy is a non-invasive tool that can help reduce bacteria in the teeth and gums, and it may also help calm sensitivity 🌿 For some patients, that can mean addressing a problem early and possibly avoiding more invasive treatment down the road. It's quick, it's comfortable, and it gives us more ways to support your mouth instead of just managing symptoms visit after visit.

My guest in Episode 41, Once You See It, You Can't Unsee It, Dr. Kirstin Ramsay, shares how ozone gave her team solutions to problems they used to just manage, and why that matters for your long-term health ✨ If you're in Katy or the Houston area and you're dealing with a sensitive tooth, I'd love to talk through your options with you.

Your laser can cut. Can it heal?

Dr. Ratna Indah covers:
-Why the first word in LASER is Light, not blade
-How light signals cells to heal, without cutting
-What dose really means: wavelength, power, time and interval

The session then turns to the clinical side: dentin sensitivity, post-surgical pain, oral ulcers, orthodontic discomfort, and why international cancer guidelines already recommend PBM to prevent oral mucositis.

👉 Uncover the healing
side of your laser at the Wellness Dental Forum 2026, hosted by Dr. Katie To on October 17–18. 41 Wellness Strategies. Link in bio.
