Dear Patients and Friends,

I’m writing to share with you of some exciting news. As of October 6, 2014, my dental practice has become affiliated with Merit Dental. While the office name has changed, our address, phone number and friendly staff will remain the same.

I look forward to continuing full time as your dentist at my office for many years. I will continue to emphasize the high quality, patient centered care that you have come to expect.

As many of you may know, I have been searching for an associate doctor for a number of years. Hand picking an associate doctor to join me takes time. When I do find the right person, I will nurture and mentor them to the philosophies and quality that are important to me for your best care. When I feel the time is right, I may get away for a month in the winter or do a shorter summer workweek. But rest assured, I will be there for you.

Thank you for your trust and confidence in allowing me to take care of your dental needs. I sincerely value your business and look forward to serving you in the years to come – just under the name of Merit Dental. The affiliation with Merit Dental will allow me to focus more on what I enjoy most – providing care to patients.

Please contact us at 269-382-4300 with any questions you may have about this change or to schedule your next appointment. I look forward to seeing you at your next appointment!

Sincerely,

Dr. Brett B. Magnuson

Let’s face it – trips to the dentist usually aren’t fun…..but at Magnuson Dental Design it’s different. Every single employee you encounter is pleasant and friendly, it is evident they all care about what they do and care about their patients. Besides the fabulous work that Dr. Magnuson does, he takes time to answer any questions you have and explains everything: pros/cons, and everything in between that may or may not end up happening just so you are well informed. His office is state of the art. He does not settle for ‘good enough’, he is a perfectionist (which I love) and will ensure that you get the best results possible. The work I’ve had done has made me feel more confident, and has given me reason to proudly smile any chance I can. I cannot recommend them highly enough! You will not be disappointed! – Gina R.

Sport Drinks and Your Teeth: What to Know

Several studies have found a link between harmful tooth erosion and sipping sports drinks. Why? They contain citric acid, which causes teeth to soften and weaken. Drink them in moderation a couple times a week and wait at least 30 minutes before brushing teeth to allow tooth enamel to re-harden.

OLD RULE - BRUSH AFTER MEALS
Bad idea if you’ve just had a very acidic food or drink (e.g., soda, citrus fruits, tomatoes, wine, coffee, tea). Acid weakens tooth enamel, so you may scrub it away.

FRESH THINK – SWISH & WAIT
To get rid of food particles, rinse with water after a meal. You should then brush 30 to 60 minutes later, once your tooth enamel has had a chance to reharden.

Another outstanding meeting of teaching, learning and welcoming newly accredited members to our organization the AACD in Orlando, FL. The meeting offered cosmetic dental professionals – including dentist, lab techs and team members – live learning through hands-on workshops and lectures.

I am honored again to share and teach dental professionals and members of the AACD clinical photography to enhance the quality of their dentistry through better communication with patients, referring doctors and laboratories. My courses consisted of two days of lecture and hands-on presentation.

The meeting also provides attendees with networking opportunities through social events, and the chance to see the latest dental technologies on display in the exhibit hall.

A Treatment with Teeth?

Brushing your teeth may save your butt: A Case Western Reserve University study finds that Fusobacterium nucleatum (Fn), an oral bacterium prevalent in people with gum disease, can promote colon cancer. Fn bacteria secrete a molecule, FadA, that binds to cells and weakens a tumor-suppressing protein. In the future, treatments that eradicate Fn may help prevent colon cancer, says study author Yiping Han, Ph.D.

Mentoring Dentists

Many of you do not know that I mentor other dentist that aspires to increase their skills in cosmetic and reconstructive dentistry. We have dentist join us in the office for a day of an over-the-shoulder courses. Others will send me images of their patients that have work in progress. I then provide feedback to help them fine-tune their eye. As you know I sit for exams for the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD) in Madison, WI. These are blind exams that we don’t know who the candidates are there by judging the case by its merits only.

I just received an email from a very talented dentist that I have been mentoring. He just received news that two of the cases he submitted were a “pass” for the accreditation process of the AACD.

Hi Brett, Good news, I passed Type 5 and Type 4!
Couldn’t have done it without you, especially the previous case 5 that failed but you taught me so much with numerous personal phone calls going over the case at each step. By the second one I was prepared.

Thanks again.

Sal, (AACD Accredited Candidate)
