According to the Center for Disease Control: Cavities (also known as caries or tooth decay) are one of the most common chronic diseases of childhood in the United States. Untreated cavities can cause pain and infections that may lead to problems with eating, speaking, playing, and learning. Children who have poor oral health often miss more school and receive lower grades than children who don’t.

SO what can you do?
For BABIES: Wipe gums twice a day with a soft, clean cloth in the morning after the first feeding and right before bed to wipe away bacteria and sugars that can cause cavities. When teeth come in, start brushing twice a day with a soft, small‑bristled toothbrush and plain water. Visit the dentist by your baby’s first birthday to spot signs of problems early. (WE welcome and serve all family members at Neal Family Dentistry)

For KIDS: Brush their teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste. Drink tap water that contains fluoride. Ask your child’s dentist to apply dental sealants when appropriate. (Neal Family Dentistry provides this treatment.)

If you're PREGNANT: See a dentist (it's safe!) before you deliver. Brush twice a day. Floss Daily. If you have nausea, rinse your mouth with 1 teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of water after you get sick. This helps wash stomach acid away and keep your tooth enamel safe.

Weekend Fun Fact:
All 20 of a baby’s primary teeth are already in their jaw at birth!
Baby teeth hide under the gums until it’s time for them to erupt. The first tooth usually comes in when your baby is between six and 10 months and the last primary teeth are typically in before their third birthday.

Teeth are covered in a hard, outer coating called enamel. Every day, a thin film of bacteria called dental plaque builds up on your teeth. The bacteria in plaque produce acids that can harm enamel and cause cavities. Brushing and flossing your teeth can prevent decay, but once a cavity forms, to avoid further damage, a dentist must fix it with a filling.

Use fluoride toothpaste to protect your teeth from decay. If you are at a higher risk for tooth decay (for example, if you have a dry mouth because of a condition you have or medicines you take), you might need more fluoride. Your dentist or dental hygienist may give you a fluoride treatment during an office visit or may tell you to use a fluoride gel or mouth rinse at home.

These are things we can advise on at Neal Family Dentistry!

On Monday's we usually introduce you to members of our staff with fun facts about them. Today, however, is a THANK YOU to our colleague and friend Colleen who has retired from Neal Family Dentistry. Colleen worked as a hygienist at this physical location for 21 years, kept patients her top priority, and shared her cake decorating talents with us on special occasions. We are privileged to have worked with you and wish you all the best in this next chapter!
