.Recently, an internet troll came full blast and cut to my core. Rather than give energy to the comment, let me just say this:
Never let someone extinguish your flame but rather surround yourself with people that encourage you to shine brighter. It’s easy to match hate with hate, but to show love in the toughest of moments, shows admirable qualities of forgiveness and compassion. Perhaps trolls will always exist and perhaps sometimes their words will sting. But the ability to rise above will always serve as my proudest moments 🔥🔥🔥 #512 #904

Summer is HERE and that means the sun is a blazin🌞(especially if you live in Austin, holy hot) But doc, you’re a dentist. Why in the world would you care about sun exposure? 🤔 You guys just have the BEST questions 😎Cancer is no joke peeps. Despite my title, I am a healthcare provider first and foremost. Prolonged, unprotected sun exposure to the lips 👄 can cause a condition called actinic cheilitis, a precancerous condition that can develop into squamous cell carcinoma or other forms of cancer 👎🏼 Also, if you are prone to herpetic lesions on your lips, sun exposure can elicit a breakout (and we all know how much those suck)💩Please enjoy your summer activities responsibly by wearing your sunscreen and reapplying throughout the day! 🏖 Remember: Prevention is KEY! 🔑

.Happy let’s take it shall we? 🧐MYTH: “My heart races after I have anesthesia, so I must be allergic” 💉FACT: Let’s start by saying that it is very rare to have an allergy to anesthetic. The above myth is actually a perfectly normal response to receiving an injection. Why? Most of our anesthetics contain epinephrine (which is actually used in event of an allergic reaction-hence the name “epi pen”🤯). Epinephrine naturally constricts our blood vessels which can temporary elevate our blood pressure🌡giving us the racing heart feeling. This feeling usually subsides after a few minutes but can throw us for a loop if we’ve never experienced it before. But wait! Alas, we HAVE experienced this before. Da what?? 🤔Epinephrine is ALSO a naturally occurring hormone produced in our adrenal glands. You know when you’re at the gym and really feeling yourself and think you can take over the world? 💪🏋️‍♀️🌏Thank your friend, epinephrine!🤝

Exploration 🔭Although our move to Austin is almost coming up on a year, the avenues of exploration keeps growing with each turn🌀This holiday weekend was a perfect staycation of adventure with trips to a new dog park🐾 and a couple Barton Springs swims💦without sacrificing the relaxation, like chilling poolside at with this cool af flamingo🌞Take time to explore, even if it’s in your backyard. Because the moments of outward exploration often lead to a glimpse of the true person that lies within🌱

.Did you think a holiday would stop us from doing ?? (Huge thanks to everyone who has or is serving to keep our country safe 🇺🇸)MYTH: “I only need my wisdom teeth out if they are bothering me”🤒FACT: I had a conversation this weekend where I expressed that my goal in dentistry is to educate on prevention🧠 Sure, I can treat conditions when they occur BUT if we can prevent said conditions, we avoid larger/more complicated procedures in the long term👍🏼 Wisdom tooth removal is no different. As we’ve evolved as a species, our diets have changed and our jaws have gotten smaller (no caveman vibes here). Due to this, many people do not have room for their wisdom teeth and complications arise which include but are not limited to: cavities, infection, pain, swelling, TMJ problems, headaches, etcJust as no 2 mouths are the same👅 and no 2 teeth are the same🤓 not all jaws and wisdom teeth are the same. If you are the anomaly with perfectly grown in wisdom teeth with no cavities or gum infection, congrats! We can maintain those bad boys. But if your wisdom teeth are being rebellious and we foresee future problems without removal, it’s time to kiss those suckers goodbye 💋👋🏼 #2018

Freeze all motor functions. Hello Dolores. 🤠What in the (West) World does dentistry have to do with one of the best shows to ever hit tv? I am so glad you askedThink of your natural teeth as the human species. Pretty advanced, can roll with the punches, and perform to a high standard💪Then came along dental implants and the whole game changed. Just like Artificial Intelligence (AI), implants have superior characteristics🔩 Implants act like natural teeth, but can withstand greater pressure and forces🏋️‍♀️ But just as AI is great for many things, there are some downsides. Implants, like AI, require unique techniques for maintenance and if not cared for properly, can revolt and cause quite a ruckus😈Moral of the story? Nothing will ever be as great as your natural teeth, but with proper care and attention, implants are a phenomenal substitute if we simply can’t does this count as 💉

.And we’re back with to debunk some dental myths!Myth: “The dentist takes way too many unneeded X-rays”☢️Fact: unfortunately, dentists have not yet acquired the skill of x-ray vision💀 (I know, super lame). Our clinical exam (or when we look in the mouth) is only about 50% of our exam. The other 50% comes from our radiographs (x-rays). We have different types of x-rays that show us different conditions:Bitewing: cavitiesPeriapical: infection/pathologyCeph: skeletal relationshipsPanoramic: tooth development, TMJ health, pathology, sinus evalCone Beam: 3D imaging If we aren’t taking necessary radiographs, we potentially miss conditions that can have severe complications down the road. The radiation exposure endured during dental radiographs has greatly decreased since the introduction of digital X-rays👍🏼Remember, we are exposed to more radiation from the sun ☀️and our cell phones📳and I don’t see many people forgoing being outside or checking that insta post 😉

Did you know that crowding causes a huge trap for a plaque and bacteria?👾 Especially in the lower front teeth where we, as humans, tend to already have large plaque deposits (due to a salivary duct that sits right behind/below those teeth)💦Think of the contacts of your teeth like the corner of the room. No matter how often you sweep your floors, if you’re not getting into those little crevices, dust and dirt can chill forevs. When bacteria and plaque hide out between the teeth for an extended stay, we tend to see more cavities and gum infection over time🤯
So what can you do? As always, prevention is key! The optimal plan to correct the crowding would be orthodontic care to make it easier to clean your teeth. Regardless, ensure you’re giving your teeth all the love they deserve with proper brushing and flossing techniques 👍🏼(yes, I said Flossing!)Can you guess who’s teeth are pictured above?

.Occasionally in my profession, we don’t want to woah….what??! 🤯 Hear me out. While evaluating an orthodontic case, orthodontists often opt for extraction (removal) of teeth due to a multitude of reasons which include but are not limited to: jaw size discrepancies, inadequate space for every tooth, tooth size discrepancies, asymmetries, etc etc (you get the picture). I won’t go into ellaborate detail, because I am not an orthodontist and want to leave the nitty gritty dets of orthodontic tx planning to the specialists 👍🏼 However, I’ll tell you that I’ve thoroughly enjoyed working side by side with to offer our patients same day treatment collaborations between general dentistry (me👩🏻‍⚕️) and orthodontics (him👨🏻‍⚕️).

. Ortho style🤩MYTH: “At home orthodontics is just as good”😟FACT: As a general dentist, I have the luxury of practicing all aspects of dentistry, as long as I seek the proper education to do so. Even though I punt most of my ortho cases to (he’s an orthodontic specialist with additional years of education and focus on orthodontic conditions and treatment🤓) I thoroughly enjoy seeking continuing ed courses that pertain to orthodontia. This past weekend, I attended my 3rd year of the American Association of Orthodontists Annual Session meeting. I sat in on lectures that challenged me and opened my eyes to new realms of orthodontics available to our patients. So rather than lecture you on why these mail in orthodontic systems are far inferior, I will pose a question to you:If your general dentists are challenged by the idiosyncrasies of tooth movement, how in the world can we expect a company with no oversight from doctors, to perform these skills with the attention and dedication to the patient’s behind the trays? 🧐Please do not forget that it is not the plastic that is moving your teeth. Rather, it is the years of education and expertise of your doctors that allows for personalized treatment modalities in treating dental and orthodontic conditions👩‍⚕️👨‍⚕️
