🚨 Community Notice – Training Exercise 🚨

On Thursday, April 2nd, from 12:30–3:30 PM, Jersey Community Unit School District 100 faculty and staff will be partnering with our local First Responders for a planned training exercise at Jersey Community Middle School. Our students will not be in session this day.

You will notice emergency vehicles at the middle school and sports complex during this time. Please do not be alarmed — this is only a drill, and there is no emergency.

We’re grateful for the opportunity to work alongside our First Responders to ensure we are always prepared and keep our students and staff safe. 💙

From a small cavity to a life-threatening heart infection — the silent danger many people underestimate

This is not an exaggeration.
An untreated dental cavity can put your life at risk.

what begins as a tiny, painless spot on a tooth can progress into a severe infection with consequences far beyond the mouth.
————————————
WHAT IS A CAVITY, REALLY?

A cavity is not just a hole in a tooth.
It is a bacterial infection.

Bacteria in the mouth feed on dietary sugars and produce acids that gradually destroy tooth enamel — the hardest structure in the human body.

Once this protective barrier breaks down, the infection spreads into the dentin and eventually reaches the dental pulp, where the nerves and blood vessels of the tooth are located.

At this point, the infection is no longer harmless.
————————————
WHEN THE INFECTION IS NO LONGER “JUST DENTAL”

When bacteria reach the pulp, a dental abscess can form — an accumulation of pus that is no longer confined to the tooth.

From there, the infection may:

• Spread to the jawbone

• Invade deep tissues of the face and neck

• Enter the bloodstream

This is where the danger becomes critical.
————————————
SERIOUS AND LIFE-THREATENING COMPLICATIONS

Untreated dental infections have been linked to:

• Infective endocarditis (infection of the heart valves or inner lining of the heart)

• Deep neck infections with risk of airway obstruction

• Brain involvement

• Sepsis, a systemic inflammatory response that can be fatal

These are not rare or theoretical events.
They are well documented in medical and dental literature.
————————————
THE BIGGEST DANGER: CAVITIES ARE OFTEN SILENT

In their early stages, cavities usually cause no pain.

There may be no warning signs.
By the time intense pain appears, the infection is often already advanced.

Waiting until it “hurts” to see a dentist is one of the most common — and dangerous — mistakes.

Advanced dental infections may also cause:

• Fever
• Difficulty chewing
• Sleep disturbances
• Digestive problems
• A significant decline in quality of life
————————————
PREVENTION IS SIMPLE — AND LIFESAVING

Preventing cavities and their complications is effective and achievable:

• Proper brushing after meals
• Daily flossing
• Reduced sugar consumption
• Regular dental check-ups, even without pain

The mouth is a gateway to the body.
A single untreated tooth can become a source of infection that affects vital organs.

Neglecting oral care during braces treatment can cause irreversible enamel damage, tooth decay, and periodontal disease. 🦷🪥
Wearing braces is a crucial step toward achieving a straight and beautiful smile, but it also requires a higher level of oral care. The brackets and wires create spaces where food particles and plaque can easily accumulate, making it more difficult to clean your teeth properly. If oral hygiene is neglected during orthodontic treatment, it can result in serious problems such as enamel decalcification, tooth decay, and gum inflammation.
Enamel damage appears as white spots around the brackets—early signs of mineral loss that can become permanent. Plaque build-up around the braces can lead to cavities, especially in hard-to-reach areas, and increase the risk of gum disease due to chronic inflammation. Over time, this can compromise not only your dental health but also the final results of your orthodontic treatment.
To prevent these complications, it's essential to brush thoroughly after every meal using an orthodontic toothbrush or electric brush, floss daily with special orthodontic aids, and maintain regular professional cleanings. Good oral hygiene is the foundation for a healthy smile—before, during, and after braces.

🛑 MYTH-BUSTING MONDAY! 🦷✨
Think you know everything about your teeth? Let’s clear the confusion 👀
👉 MYTH 1: Sugar is the only cause of cavities ❌
✅ FACT: Cavities are caused by bacteria + poor oral hygiene — even healthy foods can cause them if you don’t brush well!
👉 MYTH 2: If your teeth don’t hurt, they’re healthy ❌
✅ FACT: Dental problems often start silently. Regular check-ups catch issues early.
👉 MYTH 3: Brushing harder cleans teeth better ❌
✅ FACT: Brushing too hard can damage enamel and gums. Gentle brushing is best!
👉 MYTH 4: You don’t need to visit the dentist if you brush daily ❌
✅ FACT: Brushing is great, but professional cleaning removes hidden plaque and tartar.

👉 Comment the weirdest dental myth you’ve ever heard! 👇😄

Your mouth is way crazier than you think. 🤯
🦷 Your teeth are the only part of your body that can’t heal themselves — once they’re gone, that’s it.
🦠 Your mouth has more bacteria than people on Earth — billions living rent-free.
🧬 And every tooth? Unique like a fingerprint. That’s how investigators ID people from a single molar.
Protect your smile — it’s one of a kind. 😁

As a dental hygienist, I’ve noticed that my patients with the ✨best teeth✨ follow these 7 habits:
1️⃣ Drink more water than sugary drinks – Water washes away food and bacteria, supports saliva production, and helps prevent stains and cavities. Sugary drinks and coffee can contribute to decay and discoloration.
2️⃣ Never skip appointments – Regular check-ups catch issues early and keep your oral health on track.
3️⃣ Brush at least twice a day – Brushing for two minutes removes plaque and helps prevent cavities and gum disease. Use the right technique!
4️⃣ Floss daily – Whether you use floss, floss picks, proxy brushes, or a water flosser, cleaning between your teeth is key to preventing decay and gum disease.
5️⃣ Wear a night guard (if you grind/clench) – Night guards protect against wear, pain, and sensitivity. It’s even better if you can address the root cause!
6️⃣ Don’t smoke or v**e – These habits cause gum disease, stains, and increase your risk of tooth loss and other health issues.
7️⃣ Use a tongue scraper – It helps remove bacteria, improves breath, and reduces plaque buildup.
✨Consistency is everything!✨
