Coffee Talk: A Little Ray of May

Today is National May Ray Day — a small reminder to step outside, feel the light, and let the season do some of the work for us.

May can be a busy month. It carries Memorial Day, graduations, spring cleaning, warmer weather, and the first hints of summer. It is also Mental Health Awareness Month and National Dental Care Month, which makes it a good time to remember something simple: taking care of ourselves does not always require a grand gesture.

Sometimes it starts with sunlight.
Sometimes with a walk.
Sometimes with a phone call we have been putting off.
Sometimes with finally scheduling the appointment we know we need.

The world often tells us to measure ourselves by money, speed, and status. But health is quieter than that. Peace is quieter than that. A smile is quieter than that.

So today, take in a little May ray. Drink the coffee. Open the window. Stand in the light for a minute. And remember that caring for yourself is not falling behind.

It is how you keep going.

Best Wishes,
-ProDentalFx

Flowers and mothers have always belonged together.

As children, we made flowers from colored paper and glue, offering them with all the innocent love we had. As adults, we choose them more carefully—fresh from the earth, bright with color, and full of meaning.

Flowers remind us of hope. They bloom again and again, carrying the promise of renewal, beauty, and new beginnings. In that way, they are a little like a mother’s love: patient, life-giving, and never easily defeated.

This week, members of our ProDentalFx family went tulip picking and shared these beautiful flowers with patients at our practice. It was our small way of honoring the mothers, grandmothers, caregivers, and nurturing hearts who bring so much life into the world.

From all of us at ProDentalFx, we wish you a beautiful and joyful Happy Mother’s Day! 🌷

Welcome ProDentalFx family to Fun Fact Friday!

Here is today's juicy fact: you produce 25,000 quarts of saliva in your lifetime, enough to fill two swimming pools. Bet you didn't know you exist to do that. No. Why you exist may be up to you, but the truth is producing saliva protects your teeth and there are a lot of reasons why and factors that influence it! Here are the facts:

Saliva is one of your mouth’s most powerful natural defenses. Every day, saliva washes away food particles, neutralizes harmful acids produced by bacteria, and delivers minerals like calcium and phosphate that help repair early tooth damage. In other words, your mouth comes with its own built-in protection system working quietly around the clock.

When saliva production drops, problems can begin surprisingly fast. Dry mouth — also called xerostomia — doesn’t just feel uncomfortable. Studies show that reduced saliva increases the risk of cavities, especially along the roots of teeth, because acids linger longer and teeth lose their ability to naturally remineralize. Many people assume dry mouth is just an annoyance, but it can actually be a major contributor to tooth decay and even tooth loss over time.

One of the biggest causes of dry mouth today isn’t aging itself, but medications. Hundreds of common prescriptions — including medications for blood pressure, allergies, anxiety, depression, and attention disorders — can reduce saliva flow. That means many perfectly healthy adults may be at higher cavity risk without realizing why. If you find yourself constantly sipping water, waking with a dry mouth, or needing gum to feel comfortable, your saliva may be trying to tell you something.

The good news is that small daily habits can help support healthy saliva production. Staying well hydrated, chewing sugar-free or xylitol gum, and eating crunchy fruits and vegetables can naturally stimulate saliva flow. On the other hand, dehydration, frequent alcohol use, smoking, and excessive caffeine can reduce saliva and leave teeth more vulnerable.

So while producing 25,000 quarts of saliva may not be your life’s purpose, it is one of the reasons your teeth are able to last a lifetime. If you’ve noticed symptoms of dry mouth or increased sensitivity, let us know at your next visit — sometimes small adjustments make a big difference. At ProDentalFx, we’re always here to help you protect the smile your body has been working hard to protect all along.

Have a Great Weekend!

Ever go to the supermarket and see all the rows of new and improved and triple action whitening toothpastes and wonder – does this stuff actually whiten my teeth? Or will I be disappointed like Charlie Brown getting a rock in his stocking for Christmas? That is a very good question and the answer is…yes, they work, but slower and not as well as a professional whitening done in the dental office. Here is what whitening toothpaste actually does and how it works.

- These toothpastes remove surface stains on the outside of the tooth, whereas professional whitening treatments actually pe*****te into the dentin of the tooth (its interior) and change the color of that component.
- Most whitening toothpastes have abrasive ingredients, like hydrated silica or calcium carbonate. That means they scrub against the surface of the tooth when you brush and like a mild sandpaper scrub away stains.
- They can contain a substance called blue coravine. This chemical gives a bluish cast to the outside of the tooth, and being the opposite of yellow makes your teeth look whitish to the eye.
- Overusing whitening toothpaste is not good! They can cause sensitivity (pain) if used for an extensive period of time due to the chemical and abrasive action. Some toothpastes are more abrasive than others. The Relative Dentin Abrasivity (RDA) is an acronym for this. The higher the number the more abrasive! People with sensitive teeth should look for toothpastes with a lower RDA (eg. Sensodyne Pronamel Gentle Whitening).
- One can expect modest results with a few weeks of twice daily brushing

So that in a nutshell are the facts about whitening toothpaste. Since they actually do affect your teeth, physically and chemically, it is recommended to use whitening toothpastes only for a short period of time before returning to regular toothpaste, i.e. a few weeks.

What is agency? Agency is the ability to make things happen and to direct that happening. Personal agency is the quiet power behind every choice we make, especially when it comes to caring for our health. Oral health is one of the clearest places where this shows up. No one can brush or floss for you, or make you schedule regular dental cleanings; those small daily actions belong entirely to you. And each time you choose them, you’re choosing yourself.

Your mouth is a mirror of your habits, your priorities, and your relationship with your own wellbeing. Consistent brushing, flossing, and—crucially—seeing your dentist every six months aren’t just tasks. They’re expressions of self respect. They signal that you value your comfort, your confidence, and your long term health.

What makes oral health so empowering is that the biggest impact comes from small, repeatable actions. A few minutes in the morning and evening, mindful food choices, and twice yearly checkups create a foundation that protects you from pain, stress, and costly emergencies later on. Prevention isn’t just practical; it’s a form of personal empowerment.

And while the responsibility begins with you, you’re not walking the path alone. A supportive dental team can guide, educate, and encourage you—offering early detection, personalized advice, and care that keeps small issues from becoming major problems. When patients feel understood and equipped, their agency grows, and their outcomes follow.

Caring for your oral health is ultimately an act of choosing your future self. It’s a daily practice of saying: “I matter.” And those choices, paired with regular professional care, build a healthier, more confident life over time. A life with greater agency. Best wishes – ProDentalFx

Dear patients, have you ever seen an interproximal brush and wondered if it beats floss? Interproximal brushes, which look like toothpicks with a tiny plastic brush at the end of it were not known to me when I was a teen or young adult. But these fancy devices can hold their own against what we were always taught was the best thing for your teeth: dental floss. Let’s see how.

It seems counterintuitive. Floss, which when properly used is threaded and held against the tooth and gently brought below the gum surface and scooped upward, carrying plaque with it. On the other hand, the interproximal brush does not really go beneath your gumline. It stays above it, and the tiny bristles brush out the plaque between your teeth. Yet the effectiveness of both methods is practically equal. For flossing, in one study, plaque reduction with flossing was 73%. With the use of toothpicks it was 74%. With interproximal brushes we can hypothesize that the reduction will be even higher.

How can something that doesn’t go as deep provide good protection? Well it rests on this fact: bacteria start to cause disease right where the gum meets the tooth. That is where bacteria start to invade. And interproximal picks excel at removing bacteria at that margin because their brush like appendage fills the gap between the teeth and conforms to the surface of the tooth better, scrubbing away bacteria. The advantage of floss, being able to go slightly beneath the gum, is negated by the fact that most people don’t have good technique with it. And the convenience and ease of use of interproximal picks ensures that people will more likely use them everyday. As in many areas of medicine, good compliance is the foundation of a good result.

So that in a nutshell is the reason interproximal picks shine. We highly recommend them as they produce bacterial reduction equal to floss, but with one-and-done disposability and ease of use.
