Did you know children consume 5 times more added sugar in the summer? They’re already most likely eating more than the recommended amount, so that’s a lot of sugar.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration now states, “while no amount of added sugars or non-nutritive sweeteners is recommended or considered part of a healthy or nutritious diet, one meal should contain no more than 10 grams of added sugars.” And that should be less for children.

It can be confusing to figure out, but to help a little, no more than 12.5 tsp. of added sugar used to be the recommendation—and that equals one can of soda.

When reading labels, know that 1 teaspoon of added sugar equals 4 grams.

Also, children ages 1-6 should have no more than 4-6 oz. of juice each day, according to pediatric guidelines (and no juice for those under age 1). Children ages 7 to 18 should drink no more than 8-12 oz. Most juice boxes are about 6 oz.

If your kids live on snacks, you’re not alone. However, less sugary, tasty options do exist.
