EXTRACTION VS NON-EXTRACTION
The necessity of extractions in a particular patient is most commonly a result of inadequate space availability in the dental arch. The crowding can be so severe in some people that entire teeth are blocked out of the arch. In those cases, the need for extraction is more obvious than in other patients. There are also times where it may be possible to fit all the teeth into the arch with braces and align the teeth, however, doing so may be a detriment to the stability of the teeth, the gum tissue, or the esthetic appearance of the teeth or soft tissue.
Other reasons for extraction could include bite correction, midline correction, or soft tissue/profile improvements. The decision-making process can be quite complex, and all of the information gathered at the records appointment needs to be taken into consideration prior to making a final decision.
Generally, the bite, midlines, amount of crowding, position of the jaws, position of the teeth, future potential for growth, sizes of teeth, soft tissue/profile and other attributes are analyzed by Dr. Rowan to determine the best course of treatment. The debate about pulling teeth for braces has been going on for over 100 years, so it is not a “new” treatment philosophy or an “old” treatment philosophy, but sometimes the most stable treatment plan for that individual patient. Also please remember that every treatment plan is individually made for you at our office! Give us a call to set up your free evaluation today!

The phrase "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" is most certainly appropriate to orthodontic treatment. Those children who schedule their first visit to the orthodontist by age seven for an examination benefit from an early determination of how and when a particular problem can affect them. This does not always lead to early treatment; some problems can be treated in an interceptive manner. If so, early intervention takes advantage of facial growth and tooth eruption to lessen the severity of the problem and frequently makes later completion treatment (if necessary) less time-consuming. By addressing bad bites (malocclusions) in a timely manner, patients are assured that they can circumvent the problems of tooth decay, bone destruction, tooth loss, gum disease, and joint problems that might otherwise attend untreated conditions. If left uncorrected, malocclusions carry the potential of adversely affecting a child's speech, general health and self-esteem. Call us today to schedule your appointment!

So, you just got your braces on, and you're wondering if you should continue visiting your general dentist?

In short, the answer is YES!

One of the best reasons to visit your dentist while you undergo orthodontic treatment is to remove plaque and tarter. Having braces provides additional nooks and crannies in which food and bacteria can hide. Eventually, plaque and tarter can form around your brackets, bands or other appliances which can lead to cavities. Having your teeth professionally cleaned can help ensure most, if not all, plaque and tarter is removed.

As you know, orthodontic treatment requires you to wear various appliances on your teeth. Remember there are certain responsibilities that you must undertake to ensure that your mouth is kept in good oral health and your appliances are not damaged. These activities include good oral hygiene, following some restrictions in your diet, and wearing rubber bands (as instructed).

Our Ken's Klub Observation members/ patients are typically seen at four to six month intervals. Our goal is to stay ahead of any developing dental problems and watch growth so we can intercept any dental or jaw growth problems before they get too complicated.
We continue to watch and make sure primary teeth are falling out when they should, the permanent teeth have the available room to grow in, and any bite related problems are not getting worse.
These visits are a courtesy to our families and are done at no charge! We can not express enough the importance of Dr. Rowan seeing your child at these important visits!!!

Some ways you can improve your orthodontic experience include:
Choose the foods and candies you eat wisely. Eating extremely hard, crunchy or sticky foods can break the brackets, wires, and rubber bands that you are wearing. Try to avoid these types of foods so you don’t end up having to make an emergency visit to your orthodontist.

Always carry your orthodontic kit with you. This kit contains all the things you need to fix any problem you encounter. The kits contain toothbrushes, toothpaste, picks, floss, dental wax, and handheld mirrors.

Brush after every meal and after snacking. Food can get stuck in your braces which may cause you to experience some pain or discomfort.

Keep all your appointments with your orthodontist. These appointments will help spot and fix any problems that may have developed.
