This is how severe periodontal bone loss looks like. This is an extreme example to shows the damage well. In the span of 14 years the patient lost his tooth and all the teeth behind that all well. We frequently describe buildup on teeth as "Barnacles" but this picture shows well how tartar can attach to root surface and cause damage.

Here is a simple diagram showing the difference with how healthy teeth vs. periodontal disease presents. Periodontal disease usually results in non reversible bone loss which can be managed but very often can not be fully cured. This is a silent disease which usually doesn't cause pain until severe bone loss causes teeth to move and get infected. Good oral habits and visiting the dentist could help prevent early signs of the disease.

Did you know a poor fitting crown could feel and look good to you visually but causing bone loss and decay secretly?
Both of these crowns might feel good once placed in the mouth. Your dentist could inform you and show you areas of concern on a photograph or xray to make you aware of areas of concern or recommend treatment to correct those areas.
If you get food caught in an area of a crown or restoration or always have bleeding in certain areas, it could be a cause of concern.

Small changes over many years had caused this tooth to be completely in the wrong position and much longer than the other tooth. Changing the crown immediately improved the smile. This procedure could be done in as short as 1-2 weeks time and could help drastically improve the esthetics. Not every case is as dramatic but this patient never asked because he assumed it was going to need a major amount of work. As a new patient, he was surprised that the change could involve only a single crown replacement.

Going through some old photos and patient changes, this was a case done many years back. Proves how important it is to take good photos! Mine are clearly not the best...
We restored severe wear on the lower front teeth and helped improve his smile. The after photos were taken while he was in temporaries.
If you have similar lower front teeth with heavy wear showing the dentin, the more yellow/brown middle of the tooth, it is important to talk to your dentist. This kind of wear shows damage that will be continuous and progressive causing tooth damage, fractures and puts you at risk for decay.
