This Black History Month, the Medical Center honors and celebrates the legacies left by pioneers in UMMC’s history. Today, we are celebrating Dr. Gene Baines and Dr. Carolyn Eubanks, the first two Black graduates of the School of Dentistry at UMMC.
Both Baines and Eubanks earned their Doctor of Dental Medicine degree in 1980, only a few years after the University of Mississippi School of Dentistry admitted is first class in 1975. Both hailing from the Mississippi Delta, Baines, a native of Greenwood, and Eubanks, a native of Itta Bena, returned to the Delta region to provide dental care for Mississippi residents. Baines' practice is in Greenwood, while Eubanks practices with the Delta Health Center in Mound Bayou, allowing them to offer important care to many rural communities in the state.

We can’t wait to welcome you back to the 2022 Mississippi Dental Society 100th Year Anniversary Conference and Gala that will be held at the IP Casino Resort and Spa in Biloxi, MS March 31st – April 3rd, 2022. Get ready for some educational fulfillment with BioHorizons, Dr. Stephen Brisco from LSU , BankPlus , and Dr. Claude Brunson, MSMA. We will also have a guest holistic wellness coach Astria Goolsby of Verve, LLC who will be will discussing being mindfully fit, get ready to laugh with comedian Merc B. Williams, and get your dancing shoes ready to party with our house DJ from Grand Events. We will have various insurance companies in attendance, staff development seminars, and many other things for you to look forward to. As always we will have a plethora of food for every palate. The countdown begins!
