Did you know that chewing sugarless gum for 20 minutes after a meal helps reduce the chance of developing tooth decay? The increased saliva will help neutralize acid produced by bacteria. Ice Cubes and Trident are both great choices as they contain Xylitol. This ingredient inhibits the growth of bacteria that causes cavities. With continued use over time the quality of the bacteria in the mouth will change and fewer decay causing bacteria will survive on the tooth surface. Less plaque will form and the acid in the mouth will have lower levels.

It is still important to visit you dentist twice a year for a professional cleaning and oral exam. Even skipping one 6 month appointment can be harmful to your oral health. Small cavities can erode the tooth and will continue to get deeper until corrected. If that decay gets into the nerve more extensive treatment such as a root canal can become necessary. Regular 6 month checkups allow small problems to be diagnosed before they become large problems. Don't let life get too busy that you forget to take care of your smile. Oral health can affect your overall health.
