News of a needed root canal usually comes after weeks of ignoring a deep ache or sudden sharp pain in one tooth. By the time you call, hot coffee stings, cold water lingers, and chewing on that side is a gamble.
Here is what actually happens during a root canal at our Irving office. After getting you fully numb, Dr. Sheth gently opens the top of the tooth and cleans out the infected or inflamed nerve tissue inside each root. The space is rinsed, shaped, and filled so bacteria cannot get back in. In many cases, we place a temporary or permanent filling on top that same visit, then later cover the tooth with a crown to protect it.
Most patients describe the visit as long but boring, not painful. Afterward, the area can feel tender or bruised for a couple of days, usually controlled with regular pain medication and chewing on the other side until it settles.
Putting it off lets the infection spread and often ends in a tooth extraction instead. Not sure whether you really need a root canal or what your options are? Come in for an exam and let us walk you through your specific tooth, step by step.
