Dentin Tubules:

Dentin tubules are microscopic channels that radiate from the underside of the enamel surface to the inside of the tooth, called the pulp.

These small, hollow canals in the dentin carry sensations from the outside of the tooth to the inside. This process is often blamed for the sensitivity patients feel when the enamel is worn down. The tubules transmit hot and cold sensation and sticky and acidic stimuli (food) can affect the unprotected parts of the tooth, which stimulates the nerves and cells inside the tooth, causing discomfort.

If you are experiencing recent hot/cold teeth sensitivity, waking up with jaw muscle or joint soreness, or tooth structure cracking/chipping, you might be in risk of the COVID crack tooth syndrome. It is stress related behavior from the unforeseeable future of the COVID-19 pandemic, people are clenching and grinding their teeth more frequent and heavier than normal, especially during their sleeps. As a preventive measure, please ask your general dentist to prescribe you two sets of dental nightguards to protect your teeth from wearing away. The worst outcome of the COVID crack tooth syndrome will be either root canal treatment and crowns or extraction and implants. For the incomplete crown-root fracture, split tooth and vertical root fracture, root canal treatment will not be able to salvage the tooth, extraction for implants indicated. As of now, there are no dental imaging systems can detect crack root 50%+. Wearing nightguard every night will minimize your chance of losing more teeth.

Three tigers and a lion at Carolina Tiger Rescue in Pittsboro got free dental surgery — root canals and extractions — free of charge from the Peter Emily Veterinary Dental Foundation. The big cats had broken and worn teeth.
