Once gum disease destroys the bone supporting your teeth, rebuilding it is one of dentistry’s biggest challenges.

University of Iowa College of Dentistry professor Hongli Sun is working to change that.

With a new NIH R01 award, Sun and his research team are developing an injectable therapy designed not only to reduce the inflammation caused by periodontal disease, but also to create the conditions the body needs to rebuild lost jawbone.

The approach focuses on restoring healthy cellular energy production before encouraging bone-forming cells to become more active. If successful, that could lead to new regenerative treatments that help patients preserve their natural teeth, maintain oral function, and benefit from more predictable dental implant therapy.

“Our goal is to develop therapies that help patients keep their natural teeth longer, maintain oral function, and benefit from more predictable regenerative treatments in the future,” Sun said.

By age three, approximately one in five children has experienced tooth decay. For children with limited access to dental care, the burden can be even greater.

Iowa Dentistry researchers Jeff Banas and Mike Kanellis are studying whether a simple treatment that can be administered at home could provide additional protection for young children at the highest risk for cavities.

With support from the Ge**er Foundation, their study will investigate whether povidone iodine can target harmful bacteria in dental plaque and whether pairing it with probiotics can help promote a healthier oral microbiome.

If effective, the approach could give families and community health programs a simple, affordable tool to help prevent tooth decay before it leads to pain, infection and other complications.
