Seven symptoms. Seven different Google searches. One nighttime connection.

Brain fog, headaches, fatigue, grinding, anxiety, neck pain, and dry mouth may feel like separate problems. But when your airway narrows or closes during sleep, the effects follow you into the next day.

Your brain fights to restore breathing. Your sleep is interrupted. Your jaw, posture, nervous system, and energy all respond.

The symptoms show up in different places, but they are not random.

At West Kerr Dental, we look beyond the symptom to evaluate the bigger picture. If several of these sound familiar, it may be time to look at what is happening while you sleep.

Schedule an airway evaluation today.

Two cleanings a year may be what your insurance covers. That does not mean it is the right schedule for every mouth.

Dental care should be based on your gum health, inflammation, medical history, and individual risk factors, not simply the date of your last cleaning.

Why does that matter?

Bleeding gums are a sign of inflammation, and periodontal health may be connected to much more than your teeth. Research has found associations between gum disease and conditions including diabetes, heart disease, and Alzheimer’s disease.

In a large study of national health insurance records, adults with chronic periodontitis were 95% more likely to develop dementia, even among those with otherwise healthy lifestyle habits.

Periodontal bacteria, including P. gingivalis and T. denticola, have also been identified in the brain tissue of people with Alzheimer’s disease.

An important distinction: these findings demonstrate an association, not proof that gum disease causes dementia. Research into this connection is still developing.

But your periodontal health is something you can address. You cannot change your age or genetics, but you can evaluate and treat the inflammation occurring beneath your gumline.

If your gums bleed when you brush or floss, do not dismiss it or wait automatically for your next six-month cleaning. Let’s take a closer look and determine what your mouth actually needs.

Call West Kerr Dental to schedule your evaluation.

Think surgery is the only way to widen an adult palate? That science is outdated.

MARPE is designed to apply force directly to the palate rather than the teeth, making expansion possible for some adults without surgically breaking the jaw.

And this is about more than creating a straighter smile. Because the roof of the mouth is also the floor of the nose, widening a narrow upper jaw may create more space through the nasal airway.

Not every adult is a candidate, which is why an airway-focused evaluation matters.

Think you may have more options than you were told? Schedule a consultation with Dr. Mitchell at West Kerr Dental.

Some childhood habits don’t stay in childhood.

The way you breathed as a child may have influenced far more than your smile. It can affect how your jaw, face, and airway developed, with effects that often last into adulthood.

If you’ve ever wondered why you have crowded teeth, a narrow smile, chronic mouth breathing, snoring, or sleep issues, the answer may go back further than you think.

And if you’re a parent, there’s good news. Childhood is the best time to recognize these patterns because growing faces can often be guided while they’re still developing.

Whether you’re noticing signs in yourself or your child, understanding the connection between breathing, facial growth, and oral health can lead to better questions and better outcomes.

If this sounds familiar, we’d love to help you explore the bigger picture.

Some families spend years searching for answers. We’re on a mission to change that.

Concerns like restless sleep, frequent waking, ADHD-like symptoms, teeth grinding, and mouth breathing can be connected to how a child’s airway is developing. That’s why we look beyond teeth alone and evaluate the bigger picture.

Michelle shared that after her daughter’s evaluation and treatment, their family’s nights changed dramatically. Stories like hers remind us why comprehensive care matters.

Every child is different, and results vary, but asking the right questions can make all the difference.

If your child snores, breathes through their mouth, wakes frequently, grinds their teeth, struggles with restless sleep, or has ADHD-like symptoms, let’s start the conversation.

Back-to-school shopping lists usually include backpacks, lunchboxes, and school supplies... but don't forget your child's smile.

A few simple habits can help set them up for a healthy school year:
🪥 Schedule their dental checkup.
🥪 Pack tooth-friendly lunches and snacks.
😴 Mention any snoring, mouth breathing, or sleep concerns at their visit.
😁 Replace toothbrushes (and orthodontic brushes if needed).

Need a few lunchbox ideas? Try adding things like:
🧀 Cheese sticks
🍎 Apples or pears
🥕 Carrots with ranch or hummus
🥜 Nuts (where allowed)
🥚 Hard-boiled eggs
🥣 Plain yogurt
💧 Water instead of sugary drinks

Many parents don't realize that sleep, breathing, and oral health are all connected. If you've noticed any concerns, we'd be happy to talk through them with you.

Here's to a healthy, confident start to the 2026-2027 school year! 🎒✨

Sugar. Stress. Genetics. Poor brushing. They’ve been taking the fall for dental problems for far too long.

But cavities, teeth grinding, crowding, and enamel erosion may be telling us something more.

When breathing is obstructed, the effects can show up throughout the mouth. That’s why we look beyond the teeth to understand what may be driving the problem in the first place.

Airway-focused dentistry isn’t just about correcting what has already developed. It’s about identifying concerns early, supporting healthier growth, and helping prevent bigger problems later.
