When a Burmese-speaking family comes in, the person walking them through their child’s care speaks Burmese, and she’s right there in the room, not a voice on a phone.

Her name is Biak. She works beside us in the chair, not on a speakerphone in another building. She knows the procedures, she knows the reason behind each one, and she can hand all of it back to a family in the language they think in.

A phone translation line does what the law asks, and it works. It’s just not the same as someone at your side who can read a parent’s face and adjust in the moment.

Our Spanish-speaking families get something similar. Dr. Perez is Hispanic and takes those patients when possible. Our three doctors come from three different backgrounds on purpose, because your child is more likely to see someone who looks or sounds like them, and that matters more than most adults realize.

Your baby's teeth start forming before they're even born.

Most expecting moms have never been told that, and it surprises every single one who hears it from me. Some of those tiny baby teeth begin forming as early as the second trimester.

That means a few things during pregnancy, certain medications, high fevers, gaps in nutrition, can leave a mark on your baby's enamel that won't surface until years later. We won't name specific drugs out of context, because every pregnancy is different and every medication has a reason behind it. That part is a conversation for your OB.

But the dental side of pregnancy is one of the most overlooked pieces of prenatal care, and most pediatricians don't raise it either. The best thing you can do is have one conversation with your OB about anything you're taking, and a separate one with a pediatric dentist before your baby's first tooth comes in, not after.

I hear this one almost every day. A parent looks at their child's cavities, then at me, and figures the kid is just genetically doomed. Mom's teeth were bad, dad's teeth were bad, so this was always going to happen.

The good news, and it truly is good news: genetics plays only a small role. What drives most childhood cavities is the bacteria in the mouth, and that bacteria responds to daily habits, which means it can change. Your child's future isn't written yet.

"Will my child see the same dentist every time?" It's the question I hear most, and the honest answer is probably not, and that's perfectly okay.

We have three pediatric dentists on staff, all trained to the same standard. When one of us writes a treatment plan, the other two would write the same one. There are tiny differences in technique between us, a favorite space maintainer here and there, but the diagnosis and the approach stay the same.

Philosophically, we're aligned right down to the details. We've talked it through more times than we can count, and we agree on what we treat, when we treat, and how. That alignment is a big part of why I built the team the way I did.

For families where one of you speaks Spanish, I try to take those patients when I can, and for Burmese-speaking families our team makes sure a native speaker is in the room. The clinical care itself doesn't change from one doctor to the next.

What that means for you is simple: your child's continuity of care doesn't depend on seeing the same face each time. It depends on the practice moving as one unit, and ours does.

It's a worry some parents carry into a dental office: will my child get the same care as everyone else, or will our insurance put us at the back of the line?

We want to answer that plainly, because it matters.

Whether your child is covered by Medicaid or private insurance, the care they receive here is exactly the same. We don't differentiate between patients based on their coverage. Not in how we treat them, not in the standard we hold, not in a single part of the experience.

When a child is scared of the dentist, we never start with the heavy stuff. We have five tools for getting a nervous kid through an appointment, and we always work through them in the same order, gentlest first.

Step one is tell-show-do: explain what's happening, show your child the tool, then use it. For most kids, that alone is enough once they know what's coming.

Step two is a practice appointment with no treatment at all. Your child takes home a piece of x-ray film to practice biting on, and we try again next time. That works wonders for anxious kids who just need to test the chair first.

Step three is nitrous, the laughing gas you've probably heard of. Light, and quick to wear off.

Step four is oral sedation, a medication your child takes by mouth beforehand. Heavier than nitrous, lighter than full sedation.

Step five is sedation dentistry in our office, for kids who need treatment but can't manage the chair otherwise.

We don't skip rungs, and we don't push past where your child can handle it.

There are few things harder as a parent than watching your child in pain and being told the earliest opening is next week.

A week. When your little one is hurting right now.

That's a wait we're not willing to ask you to make.

So we do something about it. Every single day, we hold room in our schedule specifically for same-day care. Not as a rare exception, but as a standing part of how we run things, because a child in pain can't wait for a calendar to open up.
