Summer break is when kids' teeth take the biggest hit, and most parents don't realize it until fall.
Think about it β less routine, more snacking, more juice and popsicles, less supervision of brushing. Kids are at camp, at friends' houses, running around outside, and oral hygiene is the last thing on anyone's mind. Including theirs.
I see it every September. Families come in for back-to-school checkups and there's more buildup, more early decay, more issues than there were in spring. And the parents are surprised because nothing seemed different.
But... three months of less structure means three months of bacteria doing their thing with very little interruption.
The fix isn't complicated: keep the brushing routine going even when everything else gets relaxed. Pack a toothbrush for camp or sleepovers. Swap some of the juice for water β especially that fluoridated tap water that actually helps protect their enamel. And rinse with water after snacks when brushing isn't an option.
It won't be perfect. But some awareness goes a long way.
Schedule a back-to-school checkup before the year starts.
