We will be closed Thursday April 30th and Friday May 1st for our staff & doctors to attend the Iowa Dental Association’s Annual Spring Meeting out of town.

Today might be April 1st but sadly it’s no joke. Dr Arend has retired!

We celebrated Dr John after work today with lots of laughs and stories of his years of practice with Kegler, Kegler & Arend.

To say Dr John will be greatly missed is an understatement. He’s been dedicated to his patients, to his community and to his profession for a 44 years and now it’s time for Dr John to enjoy some well deserved free time.

He’s trading in his daily schedule of fillings and crowns for tee-times and play dates with his grandson!

We will miss you!

Dr. John Arend Retiring from Kegler, Kegler & Arend Family Dentistry

On April 1, 2026, after 44 years of practicing dentistry, Dr. John J. Arend is retiring.
A Dubuque native, Dr. Arend obtained his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from University of Iowa in 1982. He practiced in Cascade, Iowa for two years with Dr. Edwin Bisenius. In 1984, Dr. Arend joined Drs. A.G. and Dan Kegler to form Kegler, Kegler, and Arend DDS PC. Dr. Brad Kegler and Dr. Matt McMillan will continue to care for his patients.

Dr. Arend’s distinguishments include a fellow in the Academy of General Dentistry, as well as a fellow in Pierre Fauchard Academy of Dentistry. Dr. Arend was dedicated to dentistry, as he enjoyed serving various dental professional societies in the state. He served as president of the Waterloo District Dental Society (1999), as Board of Director of the Iowa Academy of General Dentistry (2001-2019), and served on the Board of Trustees of the Iowa Dental Association (2014-2022), ending as President in 2023.

Locally, Dr. Arend is a member, and past president, of the Independence Rotary Club. He continues to be a member of the Independence Area Ambassadors. He is a member of St. John’s Catholic Church where he served on the Parish Council.

Please join us in wishing Dr. Arend all the best in retirement! He will fulfill a few current commitments and continue to assist Dr. Brad and Dr. Matt as needed. Patients should continue to expect the same high-quality services and quality of care they have previously received.
