Using your teeth to open bottles or tear objects can permanently damage them.

Dentists regularly see patients with fractured enamel, broken fillings, cracked crowns, and even split teeth caused by using teeth as tools. The pressure created when biting metal caps or hard objects is far beyond what teeth were biologically designed to handle.

What makes cracked teeth dangerous is that many fractures start small and painless. But over time, those microscopic cracks can spread deeper into the tooth with every bite and every temperature change.

Once the crack reaches the dentin or nerve, symptoms may begin:
• Sharp pain while chewing
• Sensitivity to cold or heat
• Sudden pain when releasing pressure
• Swelling or infection around the tooth

In severe cases, the tooth can no longer be saved and may require extraction.

Unlike bone, enamel cannot regenerate or heal itself. Damage is permanent.

What seems like a harmless habit can eventually lead to:
• Crowns
• Root canal treatment
• Dental implants
• Tooth loss

Teeth are incredibly strong for chewing food — but they are not tools.
