What is TMJ disorder? Let's break it down.

TMJ, or temporomandibular joint, is the hinge right in front of your ear that connects your lower jaw to your skull. You use it every time you chew, talk, and yawn. When that joint or the small disc inside it gets irritated, it's called TMJ disorder, or TMD.
Common signs:
• Jaw pain or tenderness when chewing or first thing in the morning
• Clicking, popping, or grating when you open or close
• Trouble opening wide, or feeling like the jaw catches
• Headaches, ear pressure, or face pain that keeps coming back
What contributes: grinding or clenching, stress that tightens the jaw, a past jaw injury, arthritis, or how your bite comes together.
