Dentistry 101 Wednesday: Why Do We Have Wisdom Teeth? 🤔

Ever wonder why we have wisdom teeth if so many of us end up having them removed?

Wisdom teeth are our third set of molars, usually appearing between ages 17 and 25. Our ancestors had larger jaws and needed these extra teeth to help chew a tougher diet. Over time, human jaws have generally become smaller, leaving less room for these late-arriving teeth!

When there isn't enough space, wisdom teeth can become impacted, grow in at an angle, or be difficult to keep clean. This can lead to pain, infection, cavities, or gum problems.

🪥 The takeaway: Not everyone needs their wisdom teeth removed, but regular dental exams and X-rays when indicated can help your dentist monitor their development and determine whether treatment is needed.

💬 Did you have your wisdom teeth removed, or were you lucky enough to keep yours? Tell us in the comments!

It's Throwback Thursday!!!

A Seat Through History: The Evolution of the Dental Chair! 🪑

Did you know that the dental chair hasn't always looked the way it does today?

In the early days of dentistry, patients often sat in ordinary wooden chairs while their dentist worked. In the 1790s, Josiah Flagg, an American dentist, modified a wooden writing chair by adding a headrest and an arm extension to hold instruments—one of the earliest dental chairs designed specifically for dental treatment!

By the 1800s, purpose-built dental chairs began to appear, and by the late 19th century, adjustable chairs made it easier for dentists to reach and treat patients comfortably. Eventually, hydraulic lifts, reclining seats, overhead lights, and modern ergonomic designs transformed the dental chair into the high-tech treatment station we know today.

From a simple wooden chair to today's advanced dental equipment, dentistry has come a LONG way! 😁

💬 Question of the day: Would you rather sit in a wooden dental chair from the 1800s or today's modern dental chair? We know which one we'd choose! 😂

It's Tip Toothsday!!!

Make sure you replace your manual toothbrush or electric brush head every three to four months.

When to Replace Sooner

• Frayed bristles: Change your brush right away if the bristles look bent, splayed, or matted.

• After an illness: Get a new brush after recovering from the flu, a cold, strep throat, or cold sores to avoid reinfection.

• For children: Kids tend to chew on or press harder on bristles, so check their brushes every six to eight weeks.

It's Throwback Thursday!!!

Did you know...??

The use of a substance as toothpaste has been known to exist since at least 5000 BCE. The ancients in Greece and Rome used toothpaste made from such ingredients as pumice stone, oyster shells, and crushed bones as the abrasive bits, which were then flavored with such appetizing flavors as powdered charcoal and tree bark! The ancients in China, on the other hand, developed flavored toothpaste more akin to our modern tastes with ginseng and herbal mint flavorings.

🦷🏈 TIP TOOTHSDAY: Protect Your Smile While You Play! 🥊⚽

Did you know that about 3 million teeth are lost each year due to sports-related injuries? 😳

Whether you’re playing football, basketball, soccer, hockey, or another contact sport, a mouthguard can be one of the easiest ways to help protect your teeth from injury.

And not all mouthguards are created equal! A custom-fitted mouthguard made by your dentist provides a comfortable, secure fit and is designed specifically for your mouth—making it easier to wear and stay protected while you play.

🏆 Play hard. Play safe. Protect that smile! 😁

Talk to your dentist about whether a custom mouthguard is right for you or your athlete.

It's Throwback Thursday: A Little Dental History! 🕰️

Did you know that one of the earliest known toothbrushes dates back to around 3500–3000 BC? Ancient civilizations used small twigs with frayed ends to clean their teeth!

Fast-forward a few thousand years, and toothbrushes have come a long way. From chew sticks and boar-bristle brushes to the modern electric toothbrushes we use today, the goal has always been the same: keeping those smiles clean and healthy! 😁

Dental care has certainly changed over the centuries—and we’re pretty grateful for modern dentistry!
