Regular visits to the dentist help catch issues while they're small! Dental problems caught early are almost always easier, less expensive, and less uncomfortable to treat. Your child’s dentist can sometimes spot the beginning stages of tooth decay, even before a cavity fully forms, allowing for preventive treatments that can reverse early damage.

During regular visits, dentists also monitor how your child’s teeth are erupting and aligning, checking for bite issues that might benefit from early orthodontic intervention. What might require complex treatment if left untreated for years can often be addressed simply when caught early.

SNACK ATTACK: Braces Edition! 😛
Unfortunately, there are certain types of food that just don’t go well with braces. Kids need to take extra care with hard or crunchy foods that may dislodge a bracket or damage a wire. We recommend not chewing on ice, corn nuts, popcorn or hard candies. Kids should also avoid sticky, chewy foods. Caramel, taffy, chewing gum and other gooey things all pose risks to braces. In general, it is a good idea to limit intake of sugars, starches and highly acidic foods during braces treatment. Since it is more difficult to keep teeth clean with braces on, avoiding the foods that most directly contribute to decay is the best way to go. Parents can help by keeping a supply of braces-friendly food in the house and reminding kids what foods then need to avoid.
