The two leading causes of sensitive teeth are gum recession and enamel wear. It will typically take years or decades for the tooth enamel to wear away. When the tooth enamel wears away, it exposes the soft, inner part of your tooth. The dentin is the center of your tooth that houses thousands of microscopic nerves. You will experience intense toothaches once your dentin is exposed, and consuming things such as ice cream or hot coffee can trigger pain. Sharp pain is one of the various signs of tooth sensitivity.

Aggressive brushing, improper oral hygiene, teeth grinding, and acid erosions are many causes that lead to tooth sensitivity. Brushing too hard or too vigorous can damage the enamel. Acidic foods and drinks can weaken the tooth enamel and trigger the sensitivity at the gum line.

Healthy gums are very important for healthy teeth. When the gums recede, the dentin becomes exposed, making the nerves vulnerable to sensitivities. Gum recessions occur by aggressive brushing, gum disease, and age. The gums will look red, irritated, swell, and bleed.

If you experience any of these symptoms, it is recommended to contact your dentist right away to find a treatment to help relieve and protect against tooth sensitivity. Medications such as Sensodyne can create a barrier over the sensitive areas or soothe the nerves inside your tooth to offer you protection.

Emotional stress is not the only factor that can negatively impact your overall health and oral health. Most Americans suffer from a small degree of stress or anxiety daily. With the world remaining stagnant and uncertain due to the coronavirus pandemic, many people's stress levels have elevated.

Responses to stress can create an impact on your oral health, such as:

- Teeth grinding (bruxism) can be caused by emotional stress. This is when you unconsciously grind and clench their teeth, leading to damaged teeth, tooth sensitivity, chronic jaw/facial pain, and headaches.

- Canker sores can develop inside your mouth during times of stress. It is caused by biting your cheeks when you are experiencing anxiety.

- Nail-biting is a common reaction to a situation that brings you stress and anxiety. This habit must be corrected because it transfers germs from your nails to your mouth, and it can often lead to bacterial and viral infections.

- Stressful situations can frequently trigger TMD disorders. It can aggravate your jaw muscles to clench rapidly.

- Gum disease with chronic stress can worsen your overall health due to it wearing down and weakening your body's ability to fight off infections.

To protect your overall health and oral health, you should maintain a well-balanced diet to keep your body properly nourished. It would be best if you also worked out regularly to reduce your stress levels and get enough sleep to replenish your body.

What are dental impressions, and what are they used for? The impression captures the mold of the upper and lower teeth as a close replica of your mouth. Dental impressions are common for several dental purposes, such as creating retainers, mouth guards, whitening trays, veneers, crowns, dentures, and bridges.

To make the dental impression, a liquid putty-like material made out of alginate or a polyvinyl siloxane is mixed into a metal or plastic u-shaped (horseshoe) tray is used to comfortably fit into your teeth and gums to construct the mold.

A superb impression is needed because a lack of detail can cause a misfit. When poor impressions are created, it can affect the quality resulting in poor restoration, distortion, and impaired function. If the imprint does not show the exact shape of your teeth and gums or the slightest unique feature of your tooth, then the patient may have a tight (or lose) fit for prosthetics or restorations. An ill-proper fitting can irritate the gums and cause pain to the patient that may require another visit resulting in more time, money, and discomfort.

Everyone has their unique gum lines. Some gum lines can be high, some can be low, and some can appear to be uneven. People tend to smile less if they are self-conscious of their gum line. There are ways to change it, known as gum contouring (gingival sculpting). Gingivoplasty is one of the options that can cosmetically reshape your gum line.

Gum contouring is a procedure performed by a dental specialist such as a periodontist or cosmetic dentist. The process involves removing excess gum tissues around the teeth. The procedure is an elective procedure that is not medically necessary or life-threatening. Gum contouring is done to improve and change the looks of gum, teeth, and smile.

Gum contouring can be performed while you are awake. Local anesthesia will be given before the procedure starts. You can expect some numbness and tenderness afterward, which may cause slight discomfort. The good news is that it involves little downtime, but complete healing may take up to days or weeks, depending on the extent of removal. Soft foods such as warm soup, yogurt, apple sauce, and Jell-O are highly recommended choices of food to eat during the healing process.

Remember to have a follow-up appointment at least one week after the procedure so your dentist can check your gums and monitor the healing to detect early signs of infection. Call our office for more information regarding gum contouring, costs, and appointment.

Through the Coronavirus pandemic, everyone is encouraged to wear a face mask in public and distance from each other at least stay six feet apart. Wearing a facemask protects the virus pathogens to spread from person to person. Therefore, wearing a mask has been a daily necessity whether you’re going to the supermarket, walking your dog, or talking to someone at a safe distance.

If you detect an unpleasant foul smell of your breath under your mask, chances are it is not the mask’s quality, but it could be that you’ve got an underlying oral health issue. Statistics show that more than 80 million people worldwide may have an oral condition regarding bad breath without realizing it. Now that masks are more common, people notice the issue.

There are several reasons why bad breath occurs. While some are external reasons, such as consuming coffee, tea, garlic, or smoking, some internal reasons if you do not maintain proper oral hygiene. The best way to eliminate bad breath is to start your oral hygiene. Be sure to brush your teeth twice daily, adequate flossing, and use a fluoride mouthwash. If you still have issues, schedule an appointment with your dentist immediately. Your dentist will be able to diagnose further to help eliminate factors to provide treatment solutions.

Your oral health is a priority. Your dentist will always recommend you to upkeep and prioritize your oral health. If you develop cavities and bacteria in your mouth, it will result in halitosis (bad breath), leading to further oral complications. Call us to schedule an appointment and let us help you be informed about boosting your oral health care.

Remember to protect your teeth and gum even during the busy holiday season. As you have your mindset on various preparations for the holidays, you inevitably tend to stray away from keeping your daily oral regime. You can easily prevent dental problems from arising by following helpful guidelines. Here at Legacy Dental Care, we care for your oral health and beautiful smile. We recommend tips to avoid tooth decay, gingivitis, and halitosis during this holiday season.

Bring a toothbrush with you to remove the sugary treats and food debris from your mouth to avoid cavities. Be sure to brush your teeth twice a day for at least two minutes each time. Do not rush when brushing your teeth to ensure that you do not miss a spot.

Carry dental floss with you to remove food particles that stick between your teeth and along the gums. Foods that are trapped between the crevices of your teeth will create harmful bacteria to grow in places that are hard to reach with a toothbrush.

Try to avoid excessive alcohol in your holiday celebration. Alcohol has a high level of sugar that can affect the healthiness of your teeth. Beverages such as red wine can stain the dental enamel on your teeth, causing the teeth to lose their whiteness. However, if you must drink, remember to brush your teeth immediately after you are done.

Be cautious of what you eat, such as sugary treats, candy canes, or nuts. It is common to chip a tooth when biting into hard items such as candies and nuts. Be mindful of what you eat and protect your teeth.

If you are a chronic smoker or occasional smoker, it is highly recommended to stop smoking because it can lead to oral and overall health cancer. The ni****ne in the ci******es will stain your teeth, develop bad breath, and cause difficulty brushing or flossing. Cigarette smoking is linked to gum disease.

Although it may be fun, please avoid chewing on ice cubes. The intricate pieces of ice can damage the enamel of your teeth.

We look forward to seeing your beautiful smile in 2022! Make sure to schedule an appointment with us after your holiday festivities! Be safe and have an excellent end of the year 2021.

The most preventable oral health problem that you could develop is gum disease. Gum disease falls under the category of periodontitis that is caused by poor dental practice and hygiene. To prevent harm to your oral health, the first thing that you should consider doing is focus on brushing and flossing your teeth twice daily. However, oral home care is not the only thing you should do. Please remember that you must visit your dentist every six months for regular dental checkups. Depending on the extent severity of your gum disease, the likelihood of developing it can be prevented. Your dentist may recommend you use an antibacterial mouthwash and provide additional instructions to avoid bacteria from turning into decay-causing plaques. Mouthwash can also prevent halitosis which is a common side effect of periodontitis. If you are smoking, it will be in your best interest to quit since the carcinogens found in ci******es have been proven to cause oral, throat, and lung cancer. By following these healthy tips to maintain your oral health, you will be able to say goodbye to periodontal disease and smile with confidence!

What is a dead tooth, and what causes them? The tooth is alive with the help of the pulp, which is the innermost part of the tooth that consists of nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissues. When the pulp is damaged, the blood can be cut off, leaving the tooth to deteriorate and, as a result, die. It is important to keep in mind that there are possible ways to save the dead tooth if detected in time with proper treatment. Usually, a dead tooth occurs when there is trauma or tooth decay. When blood supply can no longer be transmitted throughout the tooth, it can cause the tooth to decay. The symptoms vary on each individual, so it is imperative that you suspect that you may have a dead or dying tooth to contact your dentist immediately to diagnose and assess your tooth. Signs such as:

• Tooth pain
• Gum pain
• Discoloration of the tooth
• Teeth sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures
• Bad breath
• Foul tastes
• Swelling or irritation of the gums

A dead tooth (or dying tooth) will always appear discolored from the rest. The first signs will be a pinkish tint color created from the blood vessels being ruptured and resulting in a greyish-black once the tooth finally is no longer functional. Please do not prolong the time to seek treatment. When your tooth is no longer viable, it is best to remove it before it develops and spreads infections to your other teeth.

There are treatments available that your dentist will be more than happy to help maintain your oral health. Depending on your circumstance, an extraction is needed to remove the tooth entirely to prevent any risk of infections and fix it with a fixed bridge or dental implant. If the tooth can be saved, the dentist can provide a root canal treatment to salvage the tooth. Your dentist will prefer to preserve the natural teeth whenever it is possible. To avoid the extremity of the situation, remember that it is highly recommended to schedule your dental appointment for a routine check-up every six months. The earlier you catch the changes in your teeth in early detection, the better the outcome is to save your natural teeth.

Are your teeth not straight or straight enough that it causes you to be embarrassed or shy to smile? If you experienced this discomfort due to the structure of your teeth, then modern orthodontics can help! There are a lot of questions regarding getting braces treatment, such as when is it an excellent time to get them? What are the requirements? How long is the duration to wear them? We are here to help answer all your questions and concerns.

People usually get braces to achieve their desired look. Braces are used to improve jaw function or orofacial appearance. Orthodontic treatments are used to correct common issues:

∙ Underbites
∙ Overbites
∙ Crowded teeth
∙ Incorrect jaw position

Patients of any age can benefit from braces. For a child, it is usually best to wait until all the adult teeth have fully erupted for the best alignment. Most children are ready for braces between the ages of 10 and 14. In standard treatment of alignment, braces are typically worn for 18 to 30 months, depending on the progress.

Numerous issues require braces:

• Those with small mouths that leave less room for teeth to grow
• Those with smaller mouths that can promote teeth crowding for permanent adult teeth
• Children tend to push their tongues forward against their lips, causing open bites or protrusion of teeth.
• Some people develop an extra tooth that causes crowding.
• The misaligned jaw structure can affect the bite position that causes difficulty to chew or annunciate letters correctly.
• There are bad habits (ex., thumb sucking) that can cause the teeth to shift.
