In order to facilitate this, parents are always welcomed to accompany their child to the treatment rooms unless they decide otherwise. As a board-certified Pediatric Dentist, I make sure that I stay up to date with the latest advances in Pediatric Dentistry in order to ensure that your child is receiving the standard of care. Sometimes a parent will pull me aside and ask, Dr. Karan, could you please talk to my little one about something that's been weighing on them?

And sometimes a child will be the one to ask me. Can I tell you something?

So we talk. About homework. About a hard week. About whatever those sweet little hearts need to set down for a minute. With a parent's blessing, I've sat on the curb outside my office and just listened to a child who needed it.

Not everyone has a safe place to say the hard things. I want my office to be one for the children who come here.

The first few minutes of a visit mean a lot to a child, and we treat them that way.

At Howell Pediatric Dentistry, when a child is nervous, we don’t open with treatment. I greet them with a smile, I make sure they feel safe, and I keep the whole experience positive.

Children pick up on the mood in the room. When our energy is calm and relaxed, the appointment goes more smoothly.

People ask how I have time to greet every family at the door, to sit and talk, to go slow. They wonder how it's efficient.

Here's my answer. I’ve never once seen a set of teeth walking down the street by themselves. Teeth are attached to people. And people need to be cared for, not processed.

When I take the time to know your babies, the whole rest of the relationship gets easier. The next visit, and the one after that, they go smoother because I know who your little one is.

Slowing down isn't the thing I do instead of good dentistry. Slowing down is the good dentistry.

That's the practice I built, and I wouldn't run it any other way.

Mom and Dad, we choose these words on purpose. A child who is laughing or curious feels more relaxed, and the words we use can shape how your little one feels before we even begin.

There's a German Shepherd named Jerry who lives in my office, and the children adore him.

He's a weighted plush, not a real dog, but he's heavy in your arms in the way that calms a racing little heart right down. The kids hold him. And you know what? So do the parents.

I keep squishies too, little things to squeeze. And when a nervous parent tells me they want a stuffed animal or a fidget, they get it. I do not sit in a place of judgment. If you need to squeeze the duck, squeeze the duck. I squeeze it too.

Comfort in this office isn't only for the babies. Sometimes a grown-up needs Jerry just as much.

I think a lot of us in healthcare have started listening to respond instead of listening to understand. And children feel that difference more than anyone.

When I really listen to a child, I learn things a chart could never tell me. Why they aren't brushing. What they're eating. What's really going on at home that's showing up in their mouth.

I'm not trying to be a therapist. I know my lane. But I do know that a child's whole life shows up with them, and you can't treat the tooth while ignoring the person it belongs to.

So I listen. All the way down. It's the part of this work I'm proudest of.
