Here's a little secret about how I get a nervous child through an appointment...

I hand them the controls. You're in charge, I tell them. But then I also say, I still have a few things I need to do, so here's what's going to happen, and I'm going to count to twenty while I do it.

They feel in control. And that feeling is what lets them sit still, open wide, and get through the part they were scared of.

It's a gentle kind of magic. They lead, and somehow we both end up exactly where we needed to go.

You cannot build a house by starting with the roof. It will collapse. You have to lay the foundation first.

That's exactly how I think about caring for your kiddo. Before any treatment, before anything clinical, I have to build the foundation. And the foundation is trust.

So I ask parents to give me the space to bond with your little one. To let me be the one who leads them through the visit. It isn't about pushing you aside. It's about building something solid enough to hold everything that comes later.

Get the foundation right, and the rest takes care of itself. Rush it, and nothing holds.

One of our young patients came in this week to get his spacers off.

He told us he thought it was going to hurt. It didn't, not even a little. In his own words, he said he trusted that we were not going to try to hurt him, so he knew it would go well.

That kind of trust doesn't happen by accident, especially for a child who had some rough dental experiences before he found us. He told us this dentist was really nice, someone he felt he could trust.

That's the whole goal here in Howell, helping kids walk in bracing for the worst and walk out knowing they were safe the whole time.

If your little one wants to bring a lovey to their appointment, bring the lovey.

If they want to wear the superhero cape, the tutu, the mismatched boots, the outfit they refuse to take off, wear it. I mean it.

I’m not interested in a child performing bravery for me. I'm interested in a child feeling safe enough that they don't have to be brave at all.

Whatever small thing helps your child feel like themselves in my chair, it’s welcome here. There are no rules about that. There's only whatever works.

I have a code I use with parents, and it works every time.

Before we start, I tell them I need what I call neutral mommy face or neutral daddy face. Calm. Easy. Because children read a parent's worry faster than they read anything I say.

And if I catch a flicker of that worry creeping in, I have a line ready. ‘Mom, ShopRite is having their can-can sale, and you have that special coupon you need to go find right now.’ It’s silly but the parent and I know exactly what it means.

That's our code for, please step out for one second and reset. The child never knows. The parent gets a breath. And we come back and carry on.

Little tricks like this are how a hard visit becomes an easy one.
