🦷 Emergency Dental Tip of the Week #2
💊 Can Antibiotics Alone Cure a Tooth Infection?
🚨 The short answer: Usually, NO.
Many people believe that taking antibiotics will completely cure a tooth infection.
The reality is more nuanced.
✅ Antibiotics are an excellent treatment for many dental infections when they are clinically indicated.
However,
❌ Antibiotics alone usually do not remove the source of the infection.
If the infection originates from a damaged or infected tooth, the bacteria often remain inside the tooth or surrounding tissues until the underlying problem is treated.
Think of it this way...
If your kitchen sink is overflowing because the drain is clogged:
🪣 Antibiotics are like mopping up the water.
🔧 Definitive dental treatment is like fixing the clogged drain.
You often need both, but fixing the source is what solves the problem.
Depending on your diagnosis, treatment may include:
✅ Root canal therapy
✅ Drainage of an abscess
✅ Tooth extraction (when necessary)
✅ Antibiotics when your dentist determines they are appropriate
🚨 Seek immediate evaluation if you have:
Facial swelling
Fever or chills
Difficulty swallowing
Difficulty breathing
Rapidly worsening pain
These symptoms may indicate a more serious infection requiring prompt care.
