As orthodontists, we see a lot in the office… but some things still make us cringe 😬

Here are a few things that can actually damage your teeth, delay treatment, or cause SERIOUS problems:

• DIY braces – moving teeth without proper diagnosis can damage roots and gums. No one should be putting braces on or doing orthodontic adjustments in their garage or without a dental license!
• Mail-order aligners – orthodontic treatment should always be monitored by a doctor. Things can really go wrong and you may not even realize it until it’s too late!
• Pulling out your own wires – this can injure your gums or change how your teeth move. Your teeth can overwork especially if you have a powerchain on!
• Using elastics that were not prescribed – rubber bands in the wrong size and worn in the wrong direction can move teeth the wrong way.
• Not wearing your retainers – your teeth WILL move! Some of us have been here before!

Orthodontic treatment is a carefully planned biological process, not just straightening teeth.

In orthodontics, elastics (orthodontic rubber bands) are worn mainly for bite correction. There are various ways they can be worn in order to create certain movements of your teeth and jaws. Leah is doing a demo of elastics being used to bring the upper and lower jaw closer together horizontally. Did you have to wear elastics? Make sure you do your part.
