-Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) has significant implications for cardiovascular health, mental illness and overall quality of life.
-When anatomic factors such as jaw size and position are the cause of the obstructive sleep apnea, Maxillomandibular advancement (MMA) is warranted. This requires both the upper and lower jaws to be detached and surgically advanced anteriorly to increase the airway space.
-After MMA is done correctly, the majority of patients experience significant improvements in sleep-disordered breathing, sleepiness, general quality of life, improvements in their mental cognitive function as well as lower blood pressure.
