To all our amazing parents: don't panic if your 8 or 9 year old’s new adult front teeth look a little wild! 🦆🦢 We see a lot of worried parents at Hi5 Smiles Dental, but we are here to reassure you about the "Ugly Duckling Stage".

Between ages 7 and 11, it is completely normal for a child's upper front adult teeth to erupt with a large gap (diastema) and flare outward. It looks a bit awkward, but it's nature's perfect design! As their adult canine teeth grow down, they push those flared front teeth together, closing the gap naturally. It’s an essential phase in pediatric dental development.

What is a Tooth Fusion?
Why did the two teeth go everywhere together? Because they were attached at the hip! 😂👯‍♂️
In dentistry, that’s actually a real thing called Tooth Fusion! Sometimes during development in the jawbone, two separate tooth buds physically join together to form one mega tooth! 🦷 It usually happens in baby teeth and looks like an extra wide tooth with a small groove down the middle. While it looks cool, fused teeth can be prone to cavities in that tiny groove, so extra careful brushing and regular dental sealants are a must!

Tongue Scraping & Halitosis
Struggling with bad breath even after brushing? Your tongue might be the culprit! The rough surface of your tongue traps bacteria and food debris, causing halitosis (bad breath). Here is the step by step guide to using a tongue scraper:

Rinse: Start with a clean, damp metal or plastic tongue scraper.
Position: Stick your tongue out and place the scraper as far back on your tongue as comfortable.
Scrape: Apply gentle pressure and pull forward to the tip. (Look at the gunk it pulls off!)
Clean & Repeat: Rinse the scraper and repeat 3-5 times until your tongue looks completely pink and clean!
Finish: Rinse your mouth with water or alcohol free mouthwash.
