Carmen started shadowing us as a pre-Dental student at Michigan State University in 2022, which created an easy transition to joining the team in April of ‘24.

Today, we celebrate Carmen as she begins an exciting new chapter. While we are certainly sad to see her leave Total Health Dentistry, we could not be more proud or excited for her as she starts her journey at Roseman University of Health Sciences, College of Dental Medicine.

Carmen has been a valued part of our team, and her passion for learning, caring for others, and commitment to health-centered dentistry will serve her incredibly well in the years ahead.

Please join us in wishing her the very best as she takes this next step toward becoming an exceptional dental professional. We’ll be cheering her on every step of the way.

In late 2016, Doctors Bale and Doneen gained recognition within the scientific community for helping bring attention to the oral-systemic connection through their evidence-based findings that periodontal disease is not merely associated with heart disease, but may play a direct contributing role in its development.

Their most recent post is too great not to share:

Most people think oral health stops at the mouth.
But inflammation and harmful bacteria in the gums can affect far more than your teeth. Research continues to show connections between oral health and heart disease, blood sugar issues, cognitive decline, memory concerns, and even pregnancy complications.

Your mouth is not separate from the rest of your body.
It’s connected to everything.

That’s why true prevention looks deeper.

Why does regular dental care and early treatment matter?

Unfortunately, dental infections can sit quietly below the tips of tooth roots for a long time without obvious symptoms. This is a perfect example.

This tooth had a previous root canal and post that ultimately failed, leading to what we call an endodontic infection — bacteria living deep within the bone around the root. Left untreated, infections like this can spread harmful bacteria throughout the body.

A common question is, “Can antibiotics fix this?”
The answer is NO. Antibiotics may temporarily reduce symptoms, but they do not eliminate the source of the infection.

In cases like this, the only predictable way to allow the area to heal is to remove the tooth and the source of the infection. After several months of proper healing, the area can be restored with a dental implant-supported tooth replacement.

THIS is why regular dental care and early treatment matter — many serious infections start silently.

Sue’s overall health has improved significantly—this goes beyond just treating her mouth. It’s about looking at the bigger picture of what truly makes us healthy as a whole human being.
