May 10th to May 16th is National Women's Health Week. We want you to know that gum disease can affect your whole body. Bad bacteria from gum infection get into your bloodstream and bring infection and inflammation to all organs including the heart, the brain, and the uterus.
Yes, in some cases advanced gum disease during pregnancy has been associated with early delivery, low birth weight, and other potential complications. Ironically, pregnancy can also cause gum disease.
Please be sure to maintain regular dental checkups throughout your pregnancy with an emphasis on periodontal examinations for gum disease. We want to keep you and future generations healthy!
