Update from Mayor Holden/Emergency Management Director - Weather Update

Per the latest briefing from the Weather Service we may see the following conditions this weekend:

◆Coastal/Surge flooding

◆Rainfall flooding

◆Severe storms, including tornadoes

◆Dangerous marine/surf conditions

A flood watch is in effect, and we can expect rainfall in the amounts of two - four inches with some localized amounts up to eight inches. There is a slight risk of rainfall producing flash flooding. A marginal risk of severe storms with winds over 60 mph exists. There is a gale warning Saturday and Sunday and a small craft advisory could begin Friday night. We can expect high seas up to nine feet within 20 nm to shore and there is a high to moderate risk of dangerous rip currents, especially Sunday. A high surf advisory is possible for 6+ foot breaking wave heights. We will continue to monitor the situation and provide additional updates as warranted.

Update from the HB TurtlePatrol - The 2026 Sea Turtle Season on Holden Beach is a Wrap

This was a remarkable year for sea turtle nesting on the East Coast. The 2026 season was the second-highest nesting season in the history of the Holden Beach Turtle Patrol, which was established in 1989.
The record-setting year for them was 2019 when DNA results reflected 52 individual female sea turtles laid 105 nests on Holden Beach. The females laid an average of two nests each, and one female laid 6 nests. That year, nest success rate was 68%.
This year, there was a total of 78 nests laid, a total of 9,092 eggs, 7,216 live hatchlings emerged, and the nest success rate was 81%. This year’s nest success may have been due to the absence of foxes, bad storms, and extremely high tides. Nest success may also have benefited from the relocation of many nests that were laid below or in the middle of escarpment created by beach erosion. It should be interesting to see 2026 DNA results after they are compiled later this year and learn how many individual females laid nests on Holden Beach this season.

This was a memorable year for the Turtle Patrol, they had some successful leadership changes, this was their second-highest nesting season, a nest was vandalized but was recovered and had hatchlings successfully emerge from that nest, and they honored one of their own. Congratulations to Maggie Seekamp in recognition of her 25 years of service to the Holden Beach Turtle Patrol and them many contributions she has made that have strengthened the organization and made their sea turtle conservation work more efficient.

Update from the HB Turtle Patrol - A Happy Ending for the Last Sea Turtle Nest on Holden Beach

On September 29, the Holden Beach Turtle Patrol closed their “Last Nest” of the 2026 nesting season. Despite being disturbed and vandalized on September 18, Nest 75 had a “Happy Ending” as it had a total of 45 live hatchlings. During the nest closeout, eight of those hatchlings were rescued and released as a large crowd of supportive beachgoers and 29 Turtle Patrol members cheered them on as they scampered down to the water. The first of the 8 sea turtle’s released at the closing was named “Holden”, the second was named “Maggie”.

Nest 75 was included in the Turtle Patrol’s new Nest Sponsor Program, launched this year. The nest was dedicated to Turtle Patrol member Maggie Seekamp in recognition of her 25 years of service and the special contributions she had made that have strengthened the Turtle Patrol and made them more efficient with their sea turtle conservation work. Congratulations Maggie!
