With a heavy heart we share the news that Dr. Tom Hughes has passed away.
As many of you know, he was a dentist in Hillsboro for many years but, a few years after retiring he heard the call to serve the dental community again so he bought a little house in New Market and converted it to a dental office. This is the very same office I have the great privilege of practicing today.
I see his old patients frequently and love hearing their stories about him which range anywhere from him buffing their gold watches and jewelery during dental appointments to piercing ears and even reloading shot gun shells for his patients. But the resounding story is always that he was an amazing dentist who would treat everyone with compassion, fairness, and excellence and would greet everyone with a warm smile and would hum a tune as he worked.
In his final years he was a resident at Bell Gardens but the staff would tell you he was more like another team member by checking on all of the residents and making sure they were well taken care of. I had to extract some teeth on a resident and they came back for a follow up and the staff accompanying her said Dr. Hughes made sure to check on her and examined the extraction sites to make sure they were healing appropriately. Even in his 90s he was still a provider! That is truly inspiring.
Thank you Dr. Hughes for your many years of service to this great community, you are greatly missed and certainly fondly remembered.
