F.A.Q. Series 🦷 “Why do you have to take X-rays on children?”
Great question! While everything may look “normal” on the surface there is a lot that could be going on that we cannot see clinically! There are many things we are looking for- some of those are missing teeth, extra teeth, teeth that are not erupting in the correct position, and of course cavities. Check out the pictures to see these instances that in the mouth looked like everything was okay!
Photo 1- This child has two extra teeth that have developed in the front of her mouth however without an X-ray we would not know they were there.
Photo 2 and 3- Our bitewing X-rays are cavity detecting X-rays. In children the most susceptible area to get a cavity starts between the teeth, without X-rays we are not able to see them starting. Both of these children were not having symptoms and could not see these by simply looking in their mouth, however, they had cavities developing between their baby molars and some were starting to get deeper!
Photo 4- This permanent canine tooth was ectopic, in other terms not in the right spot! Often times we have to intervene to allow proper eruption and avoid it damaging other permanent teeth.
