Maintaining excellent oral hygiene after your procedure will be key to prevent infection and ensure that you heal well after your procedure. In most cases, you will be able to brush your teeth within 24 hours of your surgery. We will often prescribe an antibacterial mouth rinse that will also help to keep your mouth clean while you are healing.

Dental extractions may be necessary for various reasons. Firstly, they might be required when a tooth has suffered extensive damage due to trauma or decay, and restoring it is no longer a viable option. Secondly, teeth may need to be removed as part of planned orthodontic treatment to facilitate the eruption and alignment of other teeth, ensuring a beautiful and harmonious smile. And finally, patients in their late teens and early twenties may require their wisdom teeth to be removed.

If you have plans to drift off to sleep (IV sedation or general anesthesia) for your oral surgical procedure, then it is important to not eat or drink anything for at least 6 hours prior to your surgery appointment. Daily medications should be taken with a small sip of water at least 2 hours prior to your procedure. You will also need a friend or family member to drive you home as you should not drive or operate heavy machinery for 24 hours after your surgery. This time is necessary to allow your body to fully metabolize the general anesthesia medications.

Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, typically develop in the late teenage years and early twenties. Due to limited space in the jaw, these teeth often face issues such as partial eruption or impaction, leading to dental problems like infections, damage to neighboring teeth, and cysts. Wisdom tooth extraction is often recommended in these situations and it’s important to choose an oral surgery group who provides caring treatment and thorough follow-up.

🦷 Why Do We Have Wisdom Teeth? 🦷

Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, are the last set of molars that typically come in during our late teens or early twenties. 🕰️ Historically, our ancestors had larger jaws with more room for these extra teeth, which helped them chew a rougher diet. 🌿🍖

Today, our diets have changed, and our jaws are generally smaller, leaving less space for these latecomers. 😬 As a result, wisdom teeth can often lead to crowding or other dental issues. 🦷🔍

Ever wondered if you need to have yours removed? Let’s talk about it! Drop your questions below. 👇

What qualifies as oral surgery?
Oral surgery refers to any surgical procedure performed in or around your mouth, jaw, or face, typically beyond the scope of general dental care. This can include wisdom tooth removal, dental implants, bone grafts, biopsies, corrective jaw surgery, and treatment for facial trauma or TMJ disorders. These procedures are often done by a specialist with advanced training to manage more complex cases safely and effectively. If your dentist has referred you to an oral surgeon, it’s because your needs go beyond routine care, and that’s where we come in.
