This anterior sickle used to be my go to for many years… NOT because it was my favorite BUT because the tip was so rigid and thick that I knew I could sharpen it over and over and it would last a lonnnnng time🤪.
You see it was very hard to convince my boss that our instruments did NOT last forever, BUT he was the best person and caring dentist and I loved him ( he passed away this year and he truly was a great human!)
He just did not get it when it came to our instruments! 🤷🏻‍♀️
We have so many great instrument designs and many site specific that we should be able to have the tools that we need, not just the cheapest!
It is our hands and the care we give our patients that is important. This instrument was not the most useful ( until it had been sharpened many times over🤪) but it had longevity! I do not see this instrument much any more in my sharpening because of this design,and If I do most will ask me to reduce the thickness so they can use it better.
MY POINT IS …we have to advocate for ourselves as clinicians for the correct tools for our job, not because it falls into a budget ( of course within reason), but because it is what we NEED!
It is more than obvious in my work that many have to rely on just getting “what they are allowed to get or what their OM thinks fits into the bonus budget.
It is up to us to align together! Every office needs a hygienist that will respectfully speak up and it is up to the fellow hygienists to support them to get what you need! ( and to keep it sharp as well)

Do you need a reason to consider using an RDH sharpening service over your random general sharpening service?

❓Does your service actually know how these instruments are designed and used?
🤔Do they know just how the blade that they are sharpening is actually to be adapted to the tooth structure?

❓ Do your gracey curettes come back as sickles or with both sides sharpened?
🤔Do they know the difference in universal and gracey
(I see all the time that it seems typically many do not)

❓Do they test them at the correct adaptations?
🤔The incorrect shape, even with the correct angles, could mean you are having to rotate more to over adapt putting more strain on your wrists as well as making reaching that calculus even harder. It does matter!

Sharpening with just set angle guides with no knowledge or consideration to the correct shape is not only less conservative and can greatly reduce the life of the instruments, BUT it can cause more stress and fatigue for you the clinician.

🤔 BETTER YET, DO THEY CARE? ( like we do 😊)

Have you been more concerned with saving your instruments than saving your hands??

We all know instruments don’t last forever.
***Dental hygiene instruments are only designed to last 8-12 months** and in a busy practice (which is ALL practices these days), this is pushing the limits.
Waiting longer to sharpen does not make them last longer, well let’s be real it may, BUT it is only at the risk to your hands and to your patient’s health.

On to new horizons…😌
Wonderfully exciting yet a little bittersweet!!!
So, yesterday I worked my last scheduled clinical day of hygiene!
I have so many memories and such satisfaction over the last 30 years and now I am ready to continue to make new memories and even more satisfaction as I continue to shift from serving my patients to serving my fellow hygienists FULL TIME!
KEEP YOUR EDGE will now be my full time focus and I am so excited for continued growth and meeting new friends and putting lots of smiles on faces. As I sharpened yesterday, I thought just how much better and easier it is to sharpen already well maintained instruments over extremely dulled ones , much like how much better it is scaling and working with sharp instruments vs dull ones. 😌
We should not be having to use dull instruments!!
We do have many bosses beginning to really understand this need..But we still have a lot to help get on board.
If you are in a position where you can’t sharpen or don’t have the time, like most these days, Please rally together and help those bosses understand that it’s not just a request, But it is an absolute need!!! Your hands need this and your patients need this.
If you don’t have a plan and would like help getting a routine started or maintained I would love to help with that, but whatever you do, do something 💜
Too many are just not getting what they need.
( to those who have the time and love their own sharpening, I love that!!, but believe me there are too many out here that are not in that boat so please be supportive in the comments 😊)

The Asheville Hygiene Symposium was awesome yesterday! Thank you Asheville Periodontics for the opportunity and Teacher Tina RDH for the energy and education! I so hope we can do this every year 😃

Retipping question please …🤔
Sharpening onsite today and this is a recent batch of retips they had received and cannot work at all with them (they have an entire package of them just like this). The tip is so thick and the angle is so deep that the cutting edge cannot even be adapted. The toe is completely squared off and the back is shaved flat as well. (May need to zoom in to see it well) I did reshape the toe and edges to give a better angle but this is horrible and a waste of money and time!
So I am not a fan of retipping, But I do sharpen a lot of them so I do know it is what many have to do so I am asking for knowledge of what is out there to help them.
I know there was a discussion about the quality of Goldman retips recently on one of our FB groups and this is the only company I have experience with as a hygienist and it is where these came from. I know there are other retip companies out there because I see and sharpen them, but they vary is quality and integrity so I am curious who is everyone using and what is your experience with quality?
