A good read on keeping your dental hygiene

Researchers have warned people to beware of the damage that acidic beverages have on teeth. Yet, for some, the damage and problems associated with drinking sodas, citric juices, or certain teas may have already begun to take effect.

In a recent study, Dr. Mohamed A. Bassiouny revealed three steps to rehabilitate teeth that suffer from dental erosion as a result of the excessive consumption of these products.

Is your kid sucking his/her thumb for prolonged time ? Learn about the potential harm it can cause..

Think about it, a seemingly harmless act as a child can change the facial form of the child for life and result in various respiratory, dental, and speech problems — the child would have difficulty with something as simple as biting into a sandwich or a pizza slice. Many of us can picture this scenario: a crying child driving you and everyone around you to the brink of insanity. What finally gets the child to stop? Sucking happily on his or her thumb. But this temporary relief can have serious consequences.

RELATED | Pacifiers and thumb sucking
Most children stop sucking their thumb by 2 and 1/2 years of age, and thumb-sucking is even considered normal until age 3. However, when the finger habit persists beyond the toddler years and into the adolescent years, there can be significant effects on the teeth, gums, jaws, and even facial form.
Prolonged thumb-sucking turns into a habit that can cause a dental and even a skeletal open bite. If the habit ceases while the child is still growing, the dental open bite can self-correct, but sometimes the help of a dentist or an orthodontist is required to correct the position of the teeth and align the jaws. Oftentimes the actual thumb-sucking may stop, but the child develops a tongue-thrusting habit while eating, speaking, and swallowing. This tongue-thrusting then perpetuates the deleterious force on the dentition and jaws. If the open bite is not corrected while the child is growing, then jaw surgery may be required to correct the bite.

Scientists reveal why more women suffer from TMJ disorder

BEIJING, China: More than twice as many women as men suffer from temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis. However, the mechanism underlying this significant s*x difference is still not fully understood by specialists. Now, a team of Chinese researchers has suggested that oestrogens could worsen the condition.

In the study, researchers at the Peking University School and Hospital of Stomatology treated five groups of female rats with 17β-estradiol, one of the most important natural oestrogens, at a dosage of 0, 20 and 80 μg/day, respectively.

Did you know A Glass of Milk After Eating Sugary Cereals May Prevent Cavities ?

Washing down sugary breakfast cereal with milk after eating reduces plaque acid levels and may prevent damage to tooth enamel that leads to cavities, according to new research at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Dentistry.

Dry ready-to-eat, sugar-added cereals combine refined sugar and starch. When those carbohydrates are consumed, bacteria in the dental plaque on tooth surfaces produce acids, says Christine Wu, professor of pediatric dentistry and director of cariology, who served as principal investigator of the study.

5 Things you need to know about home teeth whitening

The physical effects of aging are no fun. Bones start to creak, the back starts to ache and tired feet become a fact of life. This is because the very act of living takes its toll, little by little. The same thing happens to your teeth. As you age, years of eating and drinking, and for some people smoking, will eventually begin to stain your teeth. Some people's teeth are a bit more prone to staining than others, and of course, your level of personal and professional care plays a part as well.

Saliva heals. Animals tend to wounds by licking them, and in recent years, studies have shown that human saliva speeds up healing in people, too [source: JADA]. Naturally occurring proteins, enzymes and cellular compounds in saliva can fight infection and slow tissue loss as they pe*****te open or broken layers of skin. These same compounds help heal hard teeth, too, as they work to re-harden or remineralize the enamel. Enamel itself can't be re-grown or harden to its original state, but it can self-repair and stay strong if remineralization keeps in step with mineral breakdown -- or demineralization.

Top Tips to deal with Gag reflex - for patients as well as dentists

Unlike the happy customer to the right, quite a few people have a sensitive gag reflex. This can be very upsetting when you want to have dental treatment. Gagging can be due to psychological factors, or physiological factors, or both. Gagging can also be a physical expression of panic, related to a feeling that some threat to breathing or swallowing is about to occur. This feeling of not being able to “catch your breath” may have its roots in the past – you may have had an experience where you actually suffocated, or were close to it.

Do you eat a lot of fruit? Not to give fruit a bad name, but fruits like plums, pomegranates, grapes, lemons, and limes, though otherwise very nutritious, all contain high levels of citric, malic, or tartaric acid. And too much acid like this can erode the enamel of the teeth.
Do you eat a lot of pickles, yogurt, or other fermented foods? Like fruits, yogurt and pickles are quite acidic, containing lactic acid. Eaten too often, these high-acid foods can impede the mouth's own efforts to defend against acid erosion.
